N.Y. Transit Authority Approaches Apple About Grand Central Space: Report

The agency responsible for Grand Central Terminal has approached Apple about opening a retail store in the marquee location through which thousands of commuters and tourists pass every day, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Apple had no comment for the story but the Journal quotes Metropolitan Transportation Authority Jeremy Soffin as saying the MTA had ?spoken with Apple about the space and hopes that the company bids on it.?

Reports that Apple would open its fifth New York City store at Grand Central Terminal first circulated in February. Cult of Mac?s Leander Kahney says he had confirmed at the time the Apple store would open sometime in the fall, most likely in early September. That?s an ambitious schedule but Apple?s relatively spare store design surely does not rule out the possibility even that could happen, giving the retailer a new presence with massive built-in foot traffic in time for the holiday shopping season.

The unusual space in question is about 15,000 square feet and occupies two adjacent balconies on the north and east sides of the terminal, the Journal says, and the MTA is looking for a single renter. Part of the space is now occupied by tony restaurant Metrazur, which will be paid a handsome premium for giving up its lease, which runs through 2019.

One big consideration for any tenant is that modifications would have to be approved by the city?s landmark preservation bureau (which presumably would give Apple less trouble than the California city of Woodside?s town council gave Steve Jobs about tearing down his house.)

But Apple is no stranger to creative architectural solutions. Its 24/7 flagship New York store, on 5th across the street from Central Park and the Plaza Hotel, is underground.
