Netduino Plus 2 offers four times the speed, full round of futureproofing video

The original Netduino Plus was a welcome alternative for Arduino developers that had its limits -- even networking was almost a step too far. Secret Labs doesn't want any of us to bump our heads on the ceiling with its just-launched Netduino Plus 2. The networkable, .NET-friendly developer board runs a four times faster 168MHz processor with double the RAM (over 100KB) and six times as much code space (384KB) as its two-year-old ancestor. Having so much headroom lets the team build common OneWire and Time Server code into the firmware; Secret Labs reckons that there's enough space that the Plus 2 can easily grow over time. The ports are just as ready for the future with four serial ports, software control of any add-on shields (including Rev C Arduino shields) and a new header that lets programmers debug both managed and truly native code at once. If the upgrade is sufficiently tempting, project builders just need to spend $60 today to enjoy some newfound freedom.

Synthetic biofilter removes estrogens from drinking water

ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2012) ? Conventional methods of filtering waste water in sewage treatment plants are unable to completely remove medicine residues such as the estrogens in birth control pills. These residues then find their way into rivers and lakes and also accumulate in our drinking water. For fish and other aquatic life, estrogens can lead to reproductive and developmental disorders and even to the formation of female characteristics in males. The potential long-term consequences for human beings -- declining sperm counts, infertility, various cancers, and osteoporosis -- are still largely unknown.

Students from the Bielefeld University's Center for Biotechnology have now developed a biological filter in which specific enzymes (so-called laccases) break down these medicine residues. One known source of particularly efficient laccases is the turkey tail, a type of fungus that grows on trees. Using methods from synthetic biology, the students succeeded in synthesizing this enzyme and applying it to filter material.

'We didn't want to invent something totally crazy with our project -- just because it's technically feasible. We wanted to do something that could actually be put to use in the near future, perhaps in 20 years, and be a real benefit', explains Robert Braun, a master student of molecular biotechnology. 'The biofilter is such a project. And we have shown that our idea works. In principle, a company could now come along and develop our filter further. We ourselves have got to get back to our studies -- most of us have rather neglected them for the last 6 months. However, the experiences we have gathered more than compensate for that'.

Kids who smoke menthol more likely to get hooked

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Kids who experiment with menthol cigarettes are more likely to become habitual smokers than their peers who start out with the regular variety, new research findings suggest.

In a study of tens of thousands of U.S. students, researchers found that kids who were dabbling with menthol cigarettes were 80 percent more likely to become regular smokers over the next few years, versus those experimenting with regular cigarettes.

Menthol is added to cigarettes to give them a minty "refreshing" flavor. Critics have charged that menthol makes cigarettes more palatable to new smokers - many of whom are kids - and may be especially likely to encourage addiction.

"This study adds additional evidence that menthol cigarettes are a potential risk factor for kids becoming established, adult smokers," said study leader James Nonnemaker, of the research institute RTI International in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Still, the findings, which appear in the journal Addiction, do not prove that menthol cigarettes are to blame.

"The study's subject to a number of limitations," Nonnemaker said. "This shows an association, not cause-and-effect."

One issue, he said, is that the study was not set up specifically to answer the question of whether menthol might encourage habitual smoking.

The findings come from three years' worth of surveys of over 47,000 U.S. middle school and high school students. That included almost 1,800 kids who had just started smoking during the first or second survey - one-third of whom had opted for menthol cigarettes.

By the third-year survey, more than half of those experimenters had quit smoking. Another third were still occasional smokers, and 15 percent had become habitual smokers.

The odds of becoming a regular smoker, the study found, were 80 percent higher for kids who'd started off with menthol cigarettes. That was with the kids' age, gender and race taken into account.

The results are consistent with the idea that menthol cigarettes encourage kids to get hooked because of menthol's "sensory properties," according to Nonnemaker.

But, he said, more studies are needed. One question is whether the findings might vary by race. This study included mostly white students. But it's known that young African Americans and Asian Americans are especially likely to smoke menthol varieties.

Last year, an advisory committee to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said taking mentholated cigarettes off the shelves may benefit public health.

But studies have varied on the possible effects of the cigarettes versus regular ones.

One recent study found that menthol smokers had a higher stroke rate than those who favored the non-menthol variety. Another, however, found no higher risk of lung cancer, and no evidence that menthol fans had a harder time kicking the smoking habit.

Of course, not smoking at all is the wisest choice. The risks of the habits go beyond lung cancer, and include a range of other cancers, emphysema and heart disease - the number-one killer of Americans.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking any type of cigarettes increases a person's risk of heart disease two- to four-fold compared to non-smokers.

Social Entrepreneurship Was Created to Foster Transformational ...

 social entrepreneurship Impact Entrepreneurs

President Obama and Ruby Bridges discuss Norman Rockwell?s ?The Girl We All Live With.? Ruby was the inspiration for the girl in the painting. Click through to see a more detailed image of the work.

By Martin Montero

For the past 15 years of my life, I have very heavily invested a great deal of my time, energy and money into the field of social?entrepreneurship with a firm belief that?we needed to take very significant and powerful actions to end, or at least severely diminish, poverty. The clearest path toward greater economic equality is to fundamentally?increase the financial and political power the disenfranchised have in very direct, clear and?quantifiable?ways so that they may climb out of poverty by creating wealth. This practice is the foundational cornerstone of social?entrepreneurship.

Over the years, social entrepreneurship has greatly expanded in popularity and I have seen all sorts of individuals, teams and organizations join our ranks to create what is starting to form into an ecosystem. I?ve observed the term ?social entrepreneurship? used in all sorts of ways to describe all sorts of things, (including people and companies who have nothing to do with this space calling themselves social?entrepreneurs?and social enterprises simply because they use social media as a business tool).

Many other people and companies misappropriate or confuse the term as a clever marketing tool, for their corporate social?responsibility, or?business?s charitable giving and/or?philanthropic?efforts.?Many of these things are well intentioned and some even have good impact and make a?difference?in the lives of folks and their communities. Yet, the fact of the matter is none of this is actual social?entrepreneurship.

Well, for the past three months I?ve been having lots of conversations here in Philly, which is chock full of social, economic, political and environmental problems, defining specifically what social enterprise is,?what is its goal and what exactly is the change that it was created to foster and what it looks like. Then I ran into this?awesome Norman Rockwell painting?that illustrates the point very well. Rockwell successfully uses art for?transformational?change. When done properly, that social?entrepreneurship?can have the same impact. To expound further, that painting correlates with this?quote from Dr. Martin Luther King:

?The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others. In dangerous valleys and hazardous pathways, he will lift some bruised and beaten brother to a higher and more noble life.? -?Dr. Martin Luther King,?Strength to Love.

This philosophy and practice is very much what my role model and hero,?Muhammad Yunus, put into place when he created?Grameen Bank.?Yunus spent 30 years of his life working as an employee of Grameen, accountable to the owners and board members who were the bank customers, and the?disfranchised?women he set out to help. He did it before micro credit/finance became sexy. He did this as a highly esteemed economics professor with a very comfortable life and social standing in his community and caught a ton of?criticism, laughs, naysayers and attacks?for it at first from various angles, not just the loan sharks but even the do-gooders and the general population as well as his friends, family and colleagues.

Because his work and vision were a cultural soci-economic revolutionary act which did not ?make an impact? but created a transformational force that empowered a generation of women beggars (basically unwanted property in that culture) to become entrepreneurs with agency and control of their lives and their destiny. The effects reverberated to their next generation, who were able to attend school and be better off than them.

It is up to this and the coming generations of social entrepreneurs and those they work with to improve on his model and keep on partnering with the world?s disenfranchised so?they?can keep building even more soci-economic wealth for themselves and their prosperity. That is?transformational power that which?social entrepreneurship?was created to foster.

(AP) ? In Hollywood movies, heists usually feature criminals whose meticulous planning and high-tech equipment are used to avoid detection. But thieves who snatched seven paintings by Picasso, Matisse and Monet worth millions from a gallery in Rotterdam appear to have taken a less glamorous approach, relying mostly on speed and brute force.

In other words, the theft from the Kunsthal exhibition on avant-garde art was more "smash and grab" than "Ocean's 11."

Dutch police said Wednesday they had no suspects in the case, the largest art heist in the country for more than a decade, though an appeal to witnesses had produced more than a dozen tips for investigators to follow up.

Museum director Emily Ansenk rejected criticism of the museum's safeguards. Speaking at a news conference Tuesday evening, she defended Kunsthal's security as "state of the art" and noted that insurance companies had agreed to insure the exhibition.

And yet the thieves got away. The paintings they took are estimated to be worth roughly $100 million if sold at auction.

The theft raises questions about whether security at the Kunsthal museum, which was designed by renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, was sufficient to protect paintings worth millions of dollars each. Experts said features of the building's design and location itself may have been what initially attracted criminals.

"Speaking as a museum-goer, it's fantastic," museum security expert Ton Cremers said. "Speaking as a security expert, it's a total nightmare."

The gallery is located aside a large road that leads to a roundabout, less than a mile away, linking to highways heading in three directions. The display space where the paintings once hung is a large square area, at ground level, visible from outside through glass walls.

Though police and the museum have declined to discuss some issues that might help these or other thieves, the main details of what happened are clear.

The break-in occurred at around 3 a.m. Tuesday, police say, after someone triggered an alarm.

Investigators have focused on an emergency exit behind the building. The exit leads directly to the main exhibition hall, with paintings hung just a few yards away. Tire tracks can still be seen in the grass behind the building leading away from the exit. Police could be seen Tuesday dusting the exit for fingerprints and taking samples of the tire prints.

The paintings had been grabbed violently from the walls, leaving only white spaces and hanging wires dangling behind.

Officers were on the scene within five minutes of the alarm being triggered, according to museum director Ansenk, but the thieves were already gone.

Police spokesman Henk van der Velde said Wednesday the investigation is proceeding, though the getaway car has not been found and there are no suspects.

Agents were reviewing videotape from museum cameras.

It is unknown what will happen with the paintings if the thieves are not caught.

The thieves may "wake up and realize they can't sell the paintings easily," said Chris Marinello, of the Art Loss registry.

But they may also sell them on the black market for a fraction of their true value, or ask insurers for money in exchange for returning them.

Cremers said the museum was not at fault for relying on cameras and motion detectors, rather than human guards. Having guards on site is costly, and they would be instructed not to confront robbers during a break-in anyway.

"The only thing they can do is call police," he said.

Cremers said the museum should have looked at ways to slow potential thieves down. That might have prevented them from attempting to break in in the first place, or at least limited the size of their haul.

He said the paintings should have been hung inside behind a second makeshift wall with doors, creating a "box within a box" in the gallery.

In addition, the museum could have set up a barrier or fence preventing cars from being able to drive up right to the emergency doors.

"I'm sure they'll be looking at that now," he said.

Council president claims Carmel mayor is deceiving public, misusing money

Carmel, Ind.

The president of the Carmel City Council says an investigation into a nearly $200 million bailout of the city redevelopment commission has turned up evidence that the mayor is deceiving the public and funneling taxpayer dollars through a private group.

Carmel City Council President Rick Sharp spoke to the media in front of the Palladium on Monday because he said a settlement provided to the former Palladium CEO is a prime example of why the Carmel Redevelopment Commission and Mayor James Brainard can't be trusted.

"It is the cover-up of the action that I find most disturbing," Sharp said.

Steven Libman resigned as CEO of the Palladium in 2011, after a series of reports exposing that the city had hired private investigators to look into his spending and accusations about his personal life.

In January, Mayor Brainard and city attorney Douglas Haney signed a $100,000 settlement with Libman, but Sharp said the council was promised that it did not involve public money.

Recently, he said, the council learned that there was a $100,000 check issued to Libman by an organization called the Carmel City Center Community Development Commission (4CDC) which he said receives most of it's money from public sources.

"No matter how you spin it, the 4CDC money is taxpayer money," Sharp said.

Mayor Brainard was at the City Council meeting Monday night but declined an interview, saying he was bound to confidentiality in settlement.

Brainard did release a statement saying, "I am limited in my ability to comment on this issue by the terms of a settlement agreement that Councilman Sharp knows exists. The city entered into a settlement agreement with Mr. Libman to avoid the cost, expense and uncertainty of litigation, such as the risk of an adverse judgement against the city.

"All settlement agreements represent compromises from both sides, and part of this compromise was to agree to mutual confidentiality and non-disparagement provisions. So while I would very much like to discuss the circumstances under which we resolved this matter - and I am sure the same goes for Mr. Libman and his attorney - I simply cannot comment about the issue any further, except to make you aware that a settlement agreement does exist and that I and the City are bound by it.

"It would seem, however, that the campaign for mayor has started early. I do want to emphasize that the settlement was made on the advice of experienced and competent outside legal counsel."

In response, Sharp said he was disappointed to see the mayor respond to real criticism with a political comment about campaigns. Sharp said Brainard's comment does nothing to explain why the council was kept in the dark about money exchanging hands, and makes him more skeptical of the bailout than ever.

"When you're trying to deal with a body, an entity, an administration that has proven that they will actively cover-up things, it's kind of tough for me to pull the trigger on a potential $200 million debt issue until I feel like I can clearly feel like I have gotten to the bottom of it all," Sharp said.

The council delayed action on the bailout Monday, but in the meantime, Sharp offered some advice to the Redevelopment Commission and the 4CDC.

"I personally think it's time to clean house in these two organizations as I have told the mayor in private," Sharp said.

In addition to refusing to comment about the settlement, Mayor Brainard also said he wasn't willing to comment about the proposed redevelopment commission bailout or the status of either organization's board.

Former Carmel City Councilman John Accetturo has called on U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett to investigate if any federal laws have been broken.?

NEW YORK (AP) ? For all of his home runs, All-Star accolades and huge salaries, Alex Rodriguez finds himself in a most familiar spot this season.

A-Rod is an October lightning rod.

With every swing and miss, memories of his amazing run during the New York Yankees' championship season in 2009 fade even further. Instead, fans are becoming more and more vocal, calling for manager Joe Girardi to drop him from the No. 3 spot in the lineup.

Rodriguez struck out to end the Yankees' 3-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in Game 2 of their division series Monday night, leaving the best-of-five matchup tied at 1.

He's fanned plenty of times ? five in all while going 1 for 9 so far in the series.

"I feel fine at the plate," Rodriguez said after the loss. "I've just got to finish at-bats. I'm getting good swings."

He'll have the chance to turn things around Wednesday night when the series shifts to the Bronx for Game 3. Hiroki Kuroda (16-11) starts for New York against Miguel Gonzalez (9-4), a rookie right-hander who has 17 strikeouts in 13 2-3 innings against the Yankees in two starts.

After their train experienced an electrical outage after the loss Monday and turned a usual 2-hour, 15-minute trip to New York into a 5-hour journey, manager Joe Girardi was reluctant to address the Yankees' more pressing power problem Tuesday.

"I think that we're going to do whatever it takes to win this three-game series. Nothing that we do will be something that is just a knee-jerk reaction," Girardi said. "The great thing about this is I have a great group of guys that's very unselfish, and they really want to win. And that's what we're going to do, what we think is best to win."

Always protective of his players, Girardi might be choosing to coddle Rodriguez after watching Joe Torre cause a stir in 2006 by dropping the 14-time All-Star to eighth in the Yankees order against the Detroit Tigers in the first round.

"Sometimes it's just not as easy as just writing a name or taking a guy out, a pitcher out. You have to think about the emotional part," Girardi said. "You always have to think about that as a manager."

A big fan of the numbers, all collated in his ever-present binder, Girardi need not look too deep to see that the 37-year-old Rodriguez is not the same player that has amassed 647 homers, fewer than only Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds.

The third baseman hit only 18 home runs and had a .430 slugging percentage while driving in just 57 runs in 122 games this season, exclusively batting third or fourth for the team that scored the second most runs in the majors with 804.

Rodriguez went a startling 67 at-bats in September without an extra-base hit shortly after returning from a broken left hand. Robinson Cano, who had an RBI double Monday, had nine straight multihit games to finish the season, hitting .615 over that stretch, and many fans want to see him hit in the No. 3 slot.

Granted, Rodriguez is not the only player that's nearly Oh-for-October. Baltimore's Adam Jones is 1 for 8, Washington's Bryce Harper is 1 for 10 and Detroit's Prince Fielder is 1 for 8, but the Tigers are up 2-0.

But none of those stars have as much history as the three-time MVP, either. The highest-paid player in baseball with a contract that can exceed $300 million and has five years remaining, A-list girlfriends, a gossip page fixture.

Ending the Yankees' last two trips to the playoffs with whiffs doesn't help ? Game 6 in 2010 ALCS with a caught looking and a swinging strike three against the Tigers last year in the first round. He also hasn't homered in the postseason since hitting six in 2009, but he's fanned 17 times.

Overall, Rodriguez is a career .271 hitter in the postseason with 13 homers and 41 RBIs since making his first playoff appearance in 1995 with Seattle. He is a career .300 hitter in the regular season with 1,950 RBIs.

But Girardi insisted he likes what he sees from Rodriguez. He hit a sharp liner that Baltimore second baseman Robert Andino stopped with a dive and singled before striking out twice as the Yankees tried to rally.

"He squared up two balls," Girardi said. "You look at the ball he hit in the first inning, he squared it up. And then he had the other hard single. Right now I don't have any plans to make any changes."

Rodriguez isn't the only one struggling for the Yankees against the Orioles solid pitching staff. New York went 2 for 8 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 in Monday's loss.

W3C teams with Apple, Google, Mozilla on WebPlatform, a guide to building the open web (video)

W3C teams with Apple, Google, Mozilla on WebPlatform, a guide to building the open web videoThe World Wide Web Consortium might just be the United Nations of web development, as it's bringing together some frequent enemies to fight for a common cause through WebPlatform.org. The collaboration will see Adobe, Apple, Facebook, Google, HP, Microsoft, Mozilla, Nokia and Opera pool educational resources to create a comprehensive, frequently updated guide to creating HTML5 and other content for the open web. The companies' instructional oversight is just the start, however -- visitors will have chats and forums to devise their own solutions, and they'll even have a better than usual chance at influencing mid-development web standards. It may be some time before we'll see the first fruits of the organization's work, but we're already happy to see technology companies set aside some of their differences.

Jobs outlook worsens as mining states suffer

The outlook for the jobs market worsened in September with a key gauge of future hiring intentions slumping for the sixth consecutive month, exposing weakness in the mining states of Western Australia and Queensland.

The ANZ Job ads index fell 2.8 per cent in September, accelerating a 2.3 per cent fall in August, putting the level of job ads 10.8 per cent below a year ago.

"Total advertisements have fallen for the past six months, and in more recent times this decline has been seen across all states," said ANZ head of Australian Economics and Property Research Ivan Colhoun.

Newspaper job advertisements fell 10 per cent in September in Western Australia, and 5.3 per cent in Queensland. In South Australia they fell 2.2 per cent. Newspaper ads fell 3.6 per cent in September, while internet ads fell 2.7 per cent in the month, ANZ said.

In New South Wales newspaper ads fell 5.9 per cent, while in Victoria they rose 0.6 per cent in September, while in Tasmania they rose 5 per cent.

Newspaper ads, although in structural decline, are used in conjunction with the broader online ads index to gain a picture of the states' relative demand, ANZ said.

"Consistent with some recent project delays and cancellations in the mining sector, along with falls in the prices of Australia's key commodity exports, newspaper job advertisements in the mining states of Western Australia and Queensland declined in September," Mr Colhoun said.

Companies cutting jobs

In recent months, a string of companies have announced mass lay-offs and project cancellations, including petroleum refiner Caltex which chopped up to 630 jobs in Sydney, iron ore miner Fortescue cut 1000 jobs as a result of the slowdown in demand for the commodity. BHP Billiton and Xstrata Coal cut a combined 900 jobs last month.

The cuts are occurring as prices for commodities important to Australia fall and the outlook for demand from Asia becomes less clear.

Australia's jobless rate of 5.1 per cent in August is expected to rise to 5.3 per cent in September, when the data is released on Thursday. Although the headline unemployment figure has never breached 6 per cent since the financial crisis hit, analysts speculate that the strong number masks pockets of underlying weakness.

The Reserve Bank, in cutting the official rate to 3.25 per cent this month, flagged a weaker jobs market to come despite the strength in the official ABS figures.

"Labour market data have shown moderate employment growth and the rate of unemployment has thus far remained low," governor Glenn Stevens said in the statement accompanying the rate cut decision. "The bank's assessment, though, is that the labour market has generally softened somewhat in recent months."

ANZ had earlier overstated the strength in the job ads index, saying it had received inaccurate data from a smaller provider of internet-based advertising in May. It later issued a correction of past data in June.

Mr Colhoun said the weakness in the mining states in September, along with the general slowdown in the labour markets, rather than a rise in the official unemployment rate, likely "hastened the RBA's decision to cut" the official cash rate to 3.25 per cent from 3.5 per cent last week.

The RBA reduced the cash rate amid signs that Australia's mining investment boom was slowing, while the pace of growth in China was also slowing.

Pink's "Truth about Love" tops Billboard album chart

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop rocker Pink scored her first Billboard 200 No. 1 on Wednesday as her sixth studio album stormed the charts, beating out new debuts from Kanye West's GOOD music rappers, The Killers and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Pink's "The Truth About Love" sold 280,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan, making it the third-highest debut of 2012, behind Justin Bieber's "Believe" and Madonna's "MDNA." It is the singer's best-selling debut to date.

Sales of the album were aided by a major Target promotional campaign as well as Amazon MP3 offering the record for a discount price of $5. The lead single from the album, "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" also topped Billboard's pop songs airplay chart this week.

"Cruel Summer," the latest compilation release from Kanye West's GOOD Music label featuring West collaborating with artists including Big Sean, Pusha T and 2Chainz, sold 205,000 copies in its first week to secure the No. 2 position.

Vegas rockers The Killers came in at No. 3 with their fourth studio album "Battle Born," selling 113,000 copies in its first week. Although the band went straight to No. 1 in the UK last week, a chart-topping album in the Billboard 200 has eluded them.

Newcomer Carly Rae Jepsen, who shot to fame with the catchy summer hit "Call Me Maybe," released her debut set "Kiss" last week, and sold 46,000 copies, notching No. 6 on the chart.

Jepsen was just below last week's chart-topper Dave Matthews Band's "Away From The World" at No. 4 and Little Big Town's "Tornado" at No. 5.

"Call Me Maybe" has sold 5.7 million copies in the U.S. to date, making it 2012's biggest selling single behind only Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know."
