Researchers see natural cycle; but questions arise on climate change

For the first time, scientists have identified tropical and subtropical species of marine protozoa living in the Arctic Ocean. Apparently, they traveled thousands of miles on Atlantic currents and ended up above Norway with an unusualbut naturally cyclicpulse of warm water, not as a direct result of overall warming climate, say the researchers. On the other hand: arctic waters are warming rapidly, and such pulses are predicted to grow as global climate change causes shifts in long-distance currents. Thus, colleagues wonder if the exotic creatures offers a preview of climate-induced changes already overtaking the oceans and land, causing redistributions of species and shifts in ecology. The study, by a team from the United States, Norway and Russia, was just published in the British Journal of Micropalaeontology.

The creatures in question are radiolariamicroscopic one-celled plankton that envelop themselves in ornate glassy shells and graze on marine algae, bacteria and other tiny prey. Different species inhabit characteristic temperature ranges, and their shells coat much of the world's ocean bottoms in a deep ooze going back millions of years; thus climate scientists routinely analyze layers of them to plot swings in ocean temperatures in the past. The new study looks at where radiolarians are living now.

In 2010, a ship operated by the Norwegian Polar Institute netted plankton samples northwest of the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, about midway between the European mainland and the North Pole. When the coauthors analyzed the samples, they were startled to find that of the 145 taxa they spotted, 98 had come from much farther southsome as far as the tropics. Furthermore, the southern radiolaria were in different sizes and apparently different stages of growth for each species, indicating they were reproducing, despite the harsh conditions. It was the first time since modern arctic oceanographic research began in the early 20th century that researchers had spotted a living population of such creatures in the northern ocean.

Coauthor O. Roger Anderson, a specialist in one-celled organisms at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, said, "When we suddenly find tropical plankton in the arctic, the issue of global warming comes right up, and possible inferences about it can become very charged. So, it's important to examine critically the evidence to account for the observations." He said the invaders were apparently swept up in the warm Gulf Stream, which travels from the Caribbean into the north Atlantic, but usually peters out somewhere between Greenland and Europe. Oceanographers have previously shown that sometimes pulses of warm water penetrate along the Norwegian coast and into the arctic basin; such pulses have occurred in the 1920s, 1930s and 1950s. Further, the authors say that well-dated fossils of foraminiferaprotozoans closely related to radiolariafound on the arctic seafloor suggest that warm-water plankton may have temporarily established themselves at least several times beforearound 4200 and 4100 BC, and again around 220, 370 and 1100 AD. "All the evidence is that this isn't necessarily immediate evidence of global warming of the ocean," said Anderson. Lead author Kjell Bjrklund, of the University of Oslo Natural History Museum said of the invaders, "This doesn't happen continuouslybut it happens."

That said, oceanographers have noted that such pulses seem to be coming more often and penetrating further"exactly what one would expect from global warming," said Rainer Froese, an oceanographer at the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research who tracks fish global populations. Could this be the start of a switch in currents predicted by climate models? The most recent pulse began in the early 1980s, and has lasted more or less to the present. Even without that, the arctic ocean itself is warming rapidly; with progressive loss of summer sea ice over past decades, average surface temperature has gone up as much as 5 degrees centigrade (9 degrees Fahrenheit) since 1950 in some patches.

Physical oceanographers have different ideas on the mechanics of how more southerly water--and the things living in it--may arrive in the arctic. However, most agree that it will happen if climate keeps warming, said Arnold Gordon, head of Lamont's division of ocean and climate physics, who was not involved in the research. For one, a countercurrent running near Greenland, the North Atlantic Polar Gyre, normally wards off the Gulf Stream; but that gyre is predicted to slow with warming. Atlantic currents might also respond to changing wind patterns, or to the increasing fresh water now pouring into the northern ocean from melting sea ice and glaciers. Either way, this could draw more southerly water into the north, said Gordon.

Louis Fortier, an arctic oceanographer at Laval University in Quebec, said of the recent injections of southerly waters, "Whether or not [such] intrusions are signs of this predicted increased advection in response to climate change, nobody can tell yet, I believe. But for me, the observations so far certainly support the models." Paul Snelgrove, a specialist in cold-ocean studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland, agreed. "The question is, are these kinds of incursions becoming more frequent and stronger? If it continues, the case would become more persuasive. Right now, this study is not a definitive test, but it seems like an intriguing teaser as to what might happen."

Whatever the answer, this is the first time a living population of southern radiolaria has been found so far north. Radiolaria live only about a month, so it must have taken 80-some generations for some species to make the five- to seven-year trip, say the authors. On the way, successive generations could have adapted to colder waters. In 2009, the surface water in the sample area measured an extraordinary 7.5 degrees C (about 45.5F). A year later, when the samples were taken, it was down to a more normal level of 3.5C (38F), and yet the radiolarians were still there. However, the fast-changing nature of the ocean makes their presence in the arctic hard to interpret, said Paul Wassman, an arctic biologist at the University of Troms in Norway. Marine creatures routinely travel vast distances on currents. Water temperatures may vary widely in the same latitude. Populations of some creatures may live for a while in a narrow tongue of temperate water, then wink out once that gets too diluted, he said. Bjrklund, Anderson and their coauthor Svetlana Kruglikova of the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanography in Moscow note that it is uncertain whether the southern invaders are still there; they have not gotten any new samples since 2010.

In any case, changes in global ocean ecology are already being detected in many places. Warmer-water species are marching poleward, much as creatures are on land, where butterflies have been shifting ranges northward about 6 kilometers per decade, and amphibians and migratory birds are breeding an average of two days earlier. A 2011 global study on the impact of climate change on fisheries says that many marine species are moving poleward or into deeper, cooler waters in response to warming--among other places, along the U.S. east coast, the Bering Sea, and off Australia. The North Sea, off Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, has warmed about 2 degrees F in the last 50 to 100 years; there, 15 of 36 fish species studied have moved northward; fish more common nearer the Mediterraneananchovy, red mullet, sea bassare being caught by commercial fishermen, while cod, which prefer colder waters, are moving out. There is also evidence that zooplankton similar to the radiolaria are shifting northward in the North Atlantic. In the Pacific, poisonous algal blooms harmful to the shellfish industry are being detected farther north, into Alaskan waters.

In the arctic itself, earlier and faster melting of sea ice in the summer appears to be shifting plankton species assemblages toward smaller types. This could ultimately damage the food web that feeds much larger creatures, including seals, walruses and whales, said Jody Deming, a biologist at the University of Washington who studies arctic microbes. In an email, Deming said the new paper "presents an intriguing observation (warmer species making it into Arctic waters and surviving at least on the short term), but without more knowledge of how living radiolarians fit into the larger ecosystem, as both prey and predator, potential impacts on the whole ecosystem cannot be predicted reliably or at all really."

The big question, said Bjrklund, is what happens next. In the future, radiolaria may serve as useful indicators of how currents, and ecology, are changing. There are at least 60-some radiolaria species peculiar to the arctic; they may be quite different from the new arrivals, but too little is known about the life cycles of either group to say how either will react if they meet on a long-term basis, and how this might affect arctic ecosystems. Of the southerly radiolaria, Bjrklund said, "Will they adapt? Will they perish? Will they mix with the native fauna?" He said that he and his colleagues are anxious to receive new samples to find out.

When Is The Right Time To Buy Commercial Real Estate? | South ...

Dealing with the commercial real estate business can be overwhelming and stressful for beginners as well as those who have already been through it before. In this article, you can find tips to help reduce your stress when it comes to dealing with commercial real estate.

Always be in a position to understand, and move on a deal that is beneficial to you. Those in the know can pick up on a good deal instantly. Their secret entails that they have an exit strategy, meaning that they know when to walk away from a deal. They can assess any damage that needs to be repaired, and they are adept at deciding whether the deal will ultimately benefit their bottom line.

Location is the most important factor in choosing a commercial property to buy. Neighborhood is important, even when you are looking at commercial property. Consider how this area is growing in comparison with similar areas in the region. Do not buy a property that is located in a neighborhood likely to take a wrong turn in the next five years.

Inspections are necessary before buying any piece of real estate. When arranging an inspection, be sure to check both credentials and reputation before hiring an inspector. There are many non-accredited people who work in such fields as insect removal. A non-accredited inspector could be a source of problems.

Look into feng shui concepts to organize and design your commercial properties. Two of the most basic principles of feng shui- open spaces and clutter-free lifestyles -are also very appealing to buyers.

Think big when you are looking for a permanent location for a business that you hope will grow. To avoid the need to move in the future, invest in a piece of commercial property that allows for ample growth.

Consider what youR actual goals are before you begin to invest in commercial real estate. Write down everything you need in a commercial property, such as number of conference rooms, offices, restrooms and how much square footage.

Even though you may be running a business and ultimately need to secure profits, it?s important that you don?t embellish prices in an attempt to get an extra dollar. Your property?s actual value is influenced by many factors.

When selecting a broker, find out the amount of experience they have with the commercial market. Don?t use a broker who doesn?t specialize in the type of real estate investment you?re interested in. Once you?ve determined the broker is right for your needs, make sure any agreement into which you enter is an exclusive one.

Commercial property dealings are exponentially more complicated and time intensive than buying a residential home is. Keep in mind though that the arduous nature of this process is just a stepping stone to better dividends yielded from the hours and money you invest.

Search online for websites that provide information about real estate investments. These general interest websites can provide you with useful information whether you?re new to the world of real estate investment or have made a career out of investing. Learning more about real estate will always benefit you, and you can never learn enough.

Your investment might be very time consuming at first. It can take a little time to find a property worth purchasing, and you also may have to make necessary repairs. Do not give up because this process takes too much of your time. It will pay off in the long run.

Learn how each real estate broker intends to get you the best price before settling on one. Much like you would interview a prospective employee, question their experience and training. In addition, you should ensure that the methods they employ are ethical and that they know how to go about obtaining the best deals. Ask for examples of negotiations they have participated in previously. Tell them you want to know about both positive and negative experiences.

There are many benefits to building a personal relationship with your area real estate brokers, lenders and other investors. Many commercial properties are bought and sold without ever going on the open market. Having many people in your address book increases the chance that you are exposed to such deals.

Examine socioeconomic conditions in the neighborhood you?re thinking of purchasing commercial real estate in. Pay special attention to the unemployment rate, and the average income level in your property?s neighborhood. Properties centrally located near universities and hospitals will have a consistently higher value, and it will sell more quickly.

If the lease you are signing is for commercial real estate, be careful when presented with a form that says standard lease. Some real estate firms will add questionable requirements to these documents, and because of the length of these leases such additions are often overlooked. It is important that you go through a lease with a fine tooth comb to ensure that you avoid any potential issues this could cause.

Don?t overwhelm yourself trying to work on several types of investments at once. Put all of your attention on one investment until it?s complete. You need to focus on one type of investment, whether it be offices, apartments, land, retail, etc. Each of these investments will need to be closely monitored and given your full attention. It is better to become master of one type of investment rather than just being mediocre at many types of investments.

Secure the proper financing prior to hunting for property to buy. Financing for a commercial loan in real estate investment differs from the rules that apply to home loans. In some ways, they are better. Commercial loans will require a bigger down payment, but if the deal doesn?t go as planned, you?ll be able to avoid personal liability. Also, banks are often more relaxed and will allow you to borrow the down payment from a partner or a friend.

Finding and buying a commercial property can be a hassle no matter how many times someone has done it before. The article below will help to lower the stress involved, and have a pleasant experience during your hunt for commercial real estate.

Retro Texas plates hitting the streets in Houston

The state's new general-issue license plate, a black-on-white retro design dubbed The Texas Classic, is making its debut in the Houston area and by next month should be showing up on more cars.

With three letters and four numbers, the classic plate is easier to read and remember than its more colorful 2009 predecessor, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles said. The characters are a bit bigger than on the previous general-issue plate.

Most of the state's drivers use general-issue plates, which are included in the cost of vehicle registration.

"This is a very clean, simple look and appears to be very popular with the citizens of Texas," Victor Vandergriff, department chairman, said of the new design.

Vandergriff, board chairman since the department's inception in 2009, also touted the new plate's readability and reflective qualities as safety enhancements.

Busy design

Some witnesses to crimes told officials they had trouble catching plate numbers because the 2009 design was too busy, the department said.

The new version lacks the old plate's mountains, clouds and red streak.

Inspiration for the new design came partly from studying other states' practices, motor vehicle department spokesman Adam Shaivitz said.

A shipment of new plates arrived last week at the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector's office, spokesman Fred King said. Before the office can issue the classic plates, it has to use its existing supply.

King said that some of the 15 branches probably will be issuing the new plates during the first week of August, and soon after that all will be.

The August time frame applies only to cars. State law prohibits using the new plates on light trucks before Oct. 15, he said.

Fort Bend County Tax Assessor-Collector Patsy Schultz said her office began issuing the new plates Monday.

"Those who have noticed them said they like them," Schultz said. "They are nice-looking and very simple, which is good. They're easy to read."

More than 100 choices

For vehicle owners who like choices, the state sells more than 100 specialty-plate designs, such as Animal Friendly and Red Grapefruit, as well as plates supporting various organizations and universities.

The fee for those is $30 plus the basic vehicle registration. Personalized specialty plates issued by the state sell for $40.

Myplates.com, a private vendor that contracts with the state, offers more than 140 designs ranging in cost from $55 to $395 for one year and from $295 to $795 for 10 years. Half the revenue goes to the state, and the other half is split between myplates.com and the sponsoring organization.

Typically, the company gets 40 percent of proceeds, myplates.com spokeswoman Kim Miller Drummond said.

Period for 'eview'

An online public comment period known as an "eview," for seven new specialty-plate designs, continues through Monday. The seven designs can be viewed at www.myplates.com/go/eview.

"Every plate we put out passes the same tests as any license plate in Texas," Drummond said.

The Department of Motor Vehicles board has final say on design approval.

One of the seven is a redesign of the University of Houston plate, which myplates.com began selling in September 2010. The state has made a University of Houston plate since 1991, Shaivitz said. Both UH plates are still available.

UN approves last 30 days for UN observers in Syria

(AP) ? The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a resolution Friday renewing the 300-strong U.N. observer force in Syria for 30 days, leaving the door open for a possible extension if the government stops using heavy weapons and the escalating violence is reduced significantly.

The resolution is a lifeline for the unarmed observers who were sent to Syria three months ago to monitor a cease-fire that never happened, and to watch over the implementation of international envoy Kofi Annan's six-point peace plan, flouted by President Bashar Assad's government.

The council voted shortly after Russia's ambassador to France, Alexander Orlov, said he believed Assad was ready to step down "in a civilized way." The Syrian government immediately denied it, and the Russian Foreign Ministry said the ambassador's statements were "wrongly interpreted."

The U.N. suspended the observers' patrols and most of their other activities on June 16 because of increased violence, and its mandate had been set to expire Friday.

The force's future had been in doubt following Russian and Chinese vetoes of a Western-backed U.N. resolution Thursday pressuring Assad's government to end the civil war by threatening sanctions. Russia had opposed the resolution on grounds that it opened the door to military action, which it adamantly opposes.

In Moscow, spokesman Dmitry Peskov alluded to any future actions not sanctioned by the U.N. saying Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that "any attempts to act bypassing the U.N. Security Council will not be effective and only undermine the authority of this international organization."

He made the comments following a closed meeting with Putin and Russia's top military and intelligence officials.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin had said Friday morning that he would also veto the original British-drafted resolution on the observer mission and support a rival Pakistani text that would have extended the mission for 45 days, with the possibility of further renewals.

But after closed-door consultations called by Pakistan, all 15 council members reached agreement on a revised British text, which allows for the mission's renewal after 30 days if Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council confirm that the Syrian government has withdrawn heavy weapons from populated areas and both sides have significantly reduced the violence so the observers can do their job.

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said the resolution would allow the observers to withdraw safely, and it was unlikely the situation on the ground would change enough to enable their mandate to be renewed a second time. Russia's Churkin countered: "This is not a resolution about withdrawal. It is a resolution about continuation of the mission."

With the divided Security Council unable to adopt a resolution threatening sanctions, the U.S. and European Union are pressing to enforce their own.

The EU announced Friday it will enforce an arms embargo against Syria by boarding ships and aircraft on EU territory or in its waters suspected of carrying suspicious cargo to the war-torn nation. It said the boardings would start following expected approval by EU foreign ministers on Monday.

The seemingly contradictory reports over Assad's intentions fueled the debate over his future, which already had intensified following this week's daring attack in Damascus that killed four people close to him. The victims included his powerful brother-in-law and deputy defense minister, and his defense minister.

Orlov, the Russian ambassador in Paris, said in an interview with Radio France Internationale that Assad's acceptance of an international agreement in June for a transition toward a more democratic regime, and his subsequent naming a representative to negotiate the transition, meant that he was prepared to give up leadership.

"Personally ... I think it will be difficult for him to stay in office, given everything that's happened," Orlov told RFI.

He later backtracked in an interview with BFM TV, saying in response to a question that he did not think Assad's days were numbered.

"I say it's for Syrian people to determine that ... Is the regime coming to an end or not? It's not for me to say," Orlov said.

The ambassador blamed the confusion on the fact that he was misunderstood.

Syrian TV quickly said the interview had been taken out of context.

The Russian Foreign Ministry wrote in its Twitter feed that "It's only for the Syrian people to decide the future of the Syrian republic and its leaders."

The remarks by ambassador Orlov added a new layer of interpretation to the Geneva agreement, which was based on a U.N.-brokered peace plan that Syria's president was party to. In fact, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov underlined at the time that the plan does not require Assad's ouster, saying there is "no attempt in the document to impose on the Syrian people any type of transitional process."

Canon Pixma PRO-1

The Canon Pixma PRO-1 ($1,000 street) is Canon?s new flagship A3+ photo printer, capable of producing high-quality prints at up to 13 by 19 inches. It is a step up from the Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II ($849.99 direct, 4 stars), employing more and larger ink tanks and clocking faster photo-printing speeds. In my testing, this massive printer consistently delivered magnificent, gallery-quality prints, and did particularly well in printing monochrome images and ones with very dark backgrounds.

The Pixma PRO-1 measures 9.5 by 18.2 by 27.4 inches and weighs 61 pounds. Although large and heavy, it's not unattractive, with a matte-black finish and rounded corners. It has only 3 buttons: On, Cancel/Resume, and a button to open the ink compartment. The PRO-1 can print on cut paper sheets up to 13 by 19 inches. It has a rear tray that fits up to 150 sheets, as well as a single-sheet manual feeder, also in back, that supports thicker paper. In addition, it can print on optical discs, using an included tray.

The PRO-1 sports a whopping 12 ink tanks, each with more than twice the volume and a lower cost per milliliter than one of the Mark II's 10 ink tanks. Five of the PRO-1's ink tanks are black or shades of gray; not surprisingly, in my testing the PRO-1 did particularly well in rendering black and near-black shades. The tanks are located in two compartments, one on either side of the output tray. (It's easy to know if the tanks are seated correctly, because each tank has a light on top that will go in when properly installed, and will blink when the tank is drained.)

Colors for the pigment inks include red; yellow; cyan; magenta; photo cyan; photo magenta; matte black; photo black; light gray; gray; dark gray. The twelfth tank is a Chroma Optimizer, a coating that according to Canon covers the bumps between ink droplets to achieve uniform glossiness in dark areas and smooth tonal gradation in colors, increasing the color gamut.

Each of the ink tanks has a 36ml capacity, and Canon sells them for $35.99 each for an even $1 per milliliter. (The Chroma Optimizer tank costs slightly less, $29.99 for the same capacity.) This compares with $1.14 per ml for the Pixma Pro9500 Mark II?s smaller (14ml) tanks, and $1.21 per ml for the Editors' Choice Epson Stylus Photo R3000 ?($849 direct, 4.5 stars), whose 8 ink tanks each have a 25.9-ml capacity. ?

However, cost per ink volume may not translate directly into cost per print, for which neither Canon nor Epson give a figure (and which would be tricky to quantify for printers with so many ink tanks, as it largely depends on what's being printed). Also, Canon doesn't give a rated duty cycle for the PRO-1, so there's no way of knowing how much you can print per month without shortening the life of the printer.

Canon has geared the PRO-1 to professional photographers, but it's also suitable for photo enthusiasts (in which category I number myself) who want to get the best out of their photos?particularly ones who do a lot of black-and-white printing. It's less expensive than most DSLRs, and it's easy to set up and use; the trickiest thing about it may be finding a place to fit its hulking frame.

The Canon Pixma PRO-1 offers USB and Ethernet connectivity, whereas the Pro9500 Mark II is limited to USB connectivity. The Editors' Choice Epson Stylus Photo R3000 ($849 direct, 4.5 stars) can connect via USB, Ethernet, or WiFi.

Canon Pixma PRO-1

Printing Speed, Text, and Graphics
Print quality is paramount for this class of photo printer, but photo printing speed is also important, especially to a busy pro. In our testing using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing, the PRO-1 took an average of 2 minutes 14 seconds to print out a 4-by-6 photo, faster than the Pixma Pro9500 Mark II's 2:35 but much slower than the Epson Stylus Photo R3000's average of 53 seconds per 4-by-6 print. In fact, the R3000's average of 1 minute 41 seconds per 8-by-10 print is actually faster than it took for the PRO-1 to print out a 4-by-6. The PRO-1 averaged 3 minutes 53 seconds per 8-by-10, a step up from the Pro9500's 4:31.

Using a near-dedicated photo printer like the PRO-1 to print text documents is a bit like using a Maserati for grocery runs, but it still prints out excellent text for an inkjet, easily good enough for elegant documents like resumes or for basic marketing materials. Its graphics are also above par, suitable for marketing materials; the worst I could say about them is that some backgrounds could have been darker and some thin, colored lines bolder.

Photo Quality
Photos, of course, are this machine's raison d'etre, and in printing them out the PRO-1 excels. Print quality is exquisite, perhaps the best I've seen on an inkjet. Our monochrome test print was tint-less, with great contrast and a smooth, even background. With other prints, colors seemed true, and the printer did well in capturing subtle gradations in skin tones. There were no flaws worth mention.

In addition to our normal test suite, I printed out some ad-hoc 13-by-19-inch images on Canon's semi-gloss paper with the PRO-1. I shoot a lot of night scenes and have a particular interest in astrophotography, and photos of the night sky proved a perfect venue for testing its ability to handle black and near-black shades. I was particularly impressed with its ability to print even, dark shades with uniform ink density. (It seems that the Chroma Optimizer was working as billed, not to mention the five black or gray ink tanks.)

The near-dedicated photo printers from Canon and Epson both produce magnificent prints, though they have slightly different qualities, and those in the market for a professional-grade photo printer will want to compare output from models from each brand to see which they prefer.

The Canon Pixma PRO-1 is a formidable A3+ professional-grade photo printer, capable of consistently printing out exquisite, gallery-quality prints at up to 13-by-19-inch size. It does particularly well in printing out monochrome or nearly black output, as befitting its multiple black and gray ink tanks. Although a good professional-grade printer, it should also appeal to advanced amateurs who want to get the most out of their images. I can strongly recommend it for its superb output.

In our review of the Pixma Pro9500 Mark II, we lauded it for its top-notch black-and-white output, and the PRO-1 does at least as well. The PRO-1 is faster at printing than the Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II. It also offers larger and more ink tanks, and a lower cost per milliliter of ink than either the Pro9500 Mark II or the Editors' Choice Epson Stylus Photo R3000, though that doesn't necessarily translate directly into lower cost per page.

The R3000 is smaller, lighter, and faster than the PRO-1, has a lower price tag, and adds the ability to print from paper rolls in sizes up to 13 by 44 inches as well as WiFi connectivity and a color LCD control panel. Both printers produce exquisite, top-tier prints, and the Canon Pixma PRO-1's masterful handling of monochrome printing should make it attractive to professionals and photo enthusiasts alike.

Is this safe? Fiat offers a jolt of joe to go

The Detroit Bureau

It probably should come as no surprise that Fiat would offer the option considering Italy's intense love of a bitter shot of espresso.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

These days, almost every car on the road is likely to offer a couple cup holders. But that means you still have to brew up your own batch of java or stop at the local coffee shop on your way to work. Not so when the new Fiat 500L hits the road in October.

The European version, at least, will include what the Italian automaker is billing as ?the first standard-production car in the world to offer a true espresso coffee machine.??

Ford?s secret weapon: coffee (and Ryan Seacrest)

It probably should come as no surprise that Fiat would offer the option, considering Italy?s intense love of a bitter shot of espresso. No word whether it will make cappuccino, as well, however.

The maker is ?perfectly integrated? into the center console, the automaker explains and was developed for the 500L by Italy?s largest coffee chain, Lavazza.? It uses single-shot cartridges that minimize the hassle and avoid the risk of dumping coffee grounds all over the car.

GM?s OnStar to offer car-sharing to 6 million customers

Several other manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz and Ford, have recently introduced driver alert systems designed to signal a motorist who appears to be getting drowsy. They use a coffee cup symbol to warn that it?s time to pull over. With the Fiat 500L, apparently, a driver wouldn?t need to go looking for a coffee shop.

The Fiat 500L will be the next model to join the maker?s American line-up. It appears there are no plans to bring the espresso machine along for the trans-Atlantic ride, however.

Shake-up at Opel continues

The introduction of a full-fledged espresso machine in the new four-door model is a sharp switch in direction for Fiat. European manufacturers long disdained the American demand for cup holders, adding them only when it became apparent they were losing business to U.S. and Japanese brands.

But motorists have been looking for more than just a place to store their beverages. A number of new models now include chilled glove boxes where you can cool down a soft drink can. And the latest version of the 300C sedan, produced by Fiat?s U.S. partner Chrysler, offers cup holders that can be set to either chill or heat your beverage.

Meanwhile, for those with the resources, the new Rolls-Royce Phantom II offers a rear seat refrigerator for storing a bottle of your favorite bubbly, as well as a cut crystal decanter for those who prefer a nice single malt scotch. There are matching glasses, as well, as one might expect.

Verizon: smartphones constitute 50 percent of our postpaid customer phone base

This morning Verizon trotted out its latest financials, and amongst the numbers was a noteworthy stat. According to the big red, for the first time ever, 50 percent of its postpaid customer phone base is of the smart variety. This figure is up three percent from the last quarter, and won't factor in certain recent arrivals. Verizon's recent plan revamp is likely an attempt to cater for this trend, and ties in generally with the recent market share analysis reports. Now if a few other things come to pass, then this number is surely set to keep heading north.

Update: Appleinsider reports that to date, Verizon has sold 2.7 million iPhones, and 2.9 million Androids (some 2.5 million of which, are LTE), giving some insight into what makes up that 50 percent total.
