Holy rumors Batman! Your next game is a prequel?

Hold onto your capes, Batman fans. Word on the street today is that the critically-acclaimed,?best-selling Batman series of games?from Rocksteady Studios is getting a third?installment -- and it's going to be a prequel.

Variety reports the sequel to "Batman: Arkham Asylum" and "Batman: Arkham City" will be a "new, highly stylized" prequel that revolves around Batman's first meeting with the Joker and that it?may explore the founding of The Justice League.

According to Variety, Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment -- eyeing the success that Marvel and Disney had with The Avengers movie this summer?--?is looking for ways?to bring the DC Comics heroes together. And so the next Batman game?is going to be based on DC Comics from an era known as the Silver Age, which spans from the 1950s to the 1970s. ?It was during this time that Batman -- along with heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman --? founded the Justice League of America.

Whether the game will actually involve the Justice League is not clear. Variety says only that it has been told that?Warner Bros. Interactive "is expected to reteam some of the characters in some form."

Meanwhile, the earliest the new game would launch is?2014, reports Variety,?which suggests it?may be in the works for the next generation of game consoles. Of course,?Sony and Microsoft have yet to even officially reveal what their next machines will be and when they will launch.

So let's keep in mind that?this news is only a rumor. Warner Bros. has?declined to comment on Variety's report. Of course, Comic-Con is under way in San Diego this week, so perhaps we'll get some official news sooner rather than later.
