5 patients get HIV-infected organs in Taiwan error

(AP) ? One of Taiwan's best regarded hospitals said HIV-infected organs were mistakenly transplanted into five patients after a hospital staffer misheard the donor's test results by telephone.

The five are now being treated with anti-AIDS drugs, an official at National Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei said Monday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because she is not authorized to deal with the media.

The hospital said on its website over the weekend the mistake occurred because a transplant staffer believed he heard the English word "non-reactive" on the donor's standard HIV test, while the word "reactive" was actually given.

The information on the test result was given over the telephone and was not double-checked, as required by standard procedures, the hospital statement said.

"We deeply apologize for the mistake," the hospital said.

The Health Department will look into the mistake and decide on possible penalties for NTUH, department official Shih Chung-liang said. If negligence was found to have caused the blunder, Shih said the hospital may have to suspend its transplant programs for up to a year in addition to unspecified fines.

The donor was a 37-year-old man who fell into a coma on Aug. 24 and his heart, liver, lungs and two kidneys were transplanted to five patients on the same day. NTUH said it transplanted four organs and the heart transplant was conducted at another hospital.

The donor's mother, who was not identified, told cable news stations that she felt terrible about the transplants and had not been aware of her son's ailment. She said he died after "falling from a high spot," without providing details.

Yao Ke-wu, who heads the health department of Hsinchu city, where the donor resided, decried the NTUH transplants as "appalling negligence."

He said NTUH staffers could have avoided the mistake by asking his department about the donor's medical history in advance and deplored that such inquiries were not mandatory in Taiwan.

Yao said the five organ receivers will very likely contract HIV and their treatment will be complicated because they also have to take medication to avoid rejection of the new organs.

The five recipients are Taiwanese. NTUH is among about a dozen well-equipped and highly-respected Taiwanese hospitals offering organ transplants.

There are also concerns among the physicians and nurses who conducted the transplants that they too may contract HIV. Medical staffers routinely take protections against bodily fluids during surgeries, but some experts also warned needle and other accidential cuts could still expose them to HIV.

Lee Nan-yao, a physician with the National Chengkung University Hospital, which performed the heart transplant, told the United Daily News that some physicians and nurses who had conducted the transplant "were depressed, and on the verge of panic."

After the success of its inaugural tournament back in 1987, the Rugby Union World Cup is now considered one of the most important sporting tournaments in the world. Held every four years, the Rugby World Cup is contested by 20 nations who are put in four groups of five teams each. The winner of the tournament is awarded the Webb Ellis trophy. The most successful World Cup nations have been South Africa and Australia who have won two tournaments each.

The next Rugby World Cup, the seventh in its history, will be staged in New Zealand over seven weekends between 9 September and 23 October 2011. The final will be played at Auckland?s Eden Park.

After considerable speculation, it was announced in November 2007 that the Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand would again feature 20 teams rather than the 16 team format that had been mooted.

The Rugby World Cup 2011 takes place September 9th to October 23rd . Rugby World Cup is an exciting time for the teams that are competing and Rugby fans alike. This is one of the largest rugby competitions in the world and has been going on since 1987, with the tournaments then hosted by Australia and New Zealand, and takes place once every four years. This is the seventh Rugby World Cup, an international competition every four . At a meeting of the International Rugby Board (IRB) in Dublin, November 17, 2005, New Zealand was chosen as host country, preferably in Japan and South Africa. There were two rounds of voting by the Council of the IRB to decide the host country, South Africa eliminated in the first round.

Before this tournament, only regional tournaments were held including the Six Nations Championship which has been around since 1883, first called the Home Nations Championship, which included England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Later on France and Italy joined the mix and made it the Six Nations Championship. Also, a Tri-Nations Series was held between Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. Rugby has also been played during the Summer Olympics including the 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924 event in Paris, France.

The tournament sees the twenty nations that are in the Rugby World Cup compete September 9th to Oct 23rd throughout the host nation, in this case, New Zealand. They compete through two stages. The first ist the group stage and then they move onto a knock-out phase. Five nations are divided into four different pools, which are given the designation of A, B, C and D. The top four are seeded teams from the previous tournaments and then the remaining spot in each pool is taken by the four nations who were the losing quarter finalists from the previous event, put randomly into a pool.

In 2011, the A pool starts with New Zealand, then includes France, Tsonga and Canada with the final nation in Pool A, Japan. In the B Pool, Argentina is at the top followed by England, Scotland, Georgia and an unannounced playoff winner. Then, in Pool C, Australia, Ireland, Italy, Russia and the United States and Pool D includes South Africa, Wales, Fiji, Samoa and Namibia.

There are twelve host cities in New Zealand that will see the Rugby World Cup played. They are scattered from one end of New Zealand to the other and include Whangerei, Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua, as well as New Plymouth, Napier, Palmerston North and Wellington. Also, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill will be host cities of the 2011 tournament. Report: NASA made proper pick for retired shuttles

In this photo made available by NASA, space shuttles Endeavour and Discovery meet in a "nose-to-nose" photo opportunity as the vehicles switch locations Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. Discovery was moved from the Vehicle Assembly Building into the Orbiter Processing Facility, switching places with Endeavour. Discovery will head next spring to a Virginia hangar belonging to the Smithsonian Institution. Edeavour will then be transported to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/NASA, Frankie Martin)

(AP) ? NASA acted properly when it picked new homes for the retired space shuttles, the space agency's watchdog said Thursday.

The shuttles were awarded in April to museums in suburban Washington, Los Angeles, Cape Canaveral, Fla., and New York, based on recommendations by a special NASA team and a decision by NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, a former shuttle commander.

Congressional and local officials for two of the losing cities ? Houston and Dayton ? had asked for an investigation, alleging political influences in the bidding process.

"We found no evidence that the team's recommendation or the administrator's decision were tainted by political influence of any other improper consideration," Inspector General Paul Martin wrote in the report released Thursday. "Moreover, we found no attempt by White House officials to direct or influence Bolden's decision making."

The decision was based on attendance, population, funding and the facility. NASA said 13 of the bidders met their requirements and rated those on several categories, giving them a numerical score.

There was a scoring error for the Air Force Museum in Dayton and it should have tied with Cape Canaveral and New York, the inspector general found. But NASA chief Bolden told investigators he still would have picked the same cities because they had bigger populations and more international visitors. Also Dayton museum officials told him they might not be able to raise enough money.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, one of the officials who'd asked for the investigation, said in a statement Thursday that while NASA may have followed the rules in selecting the sites, it showed "incredibly bad judgment." The selection criteria gave more weight to international visitors than to geographic diversity of shuttle locations, he said.

"It is outrageous that easy access for foreign visitors was deemed more important than access for visitors from America's heartland," Brown said.

Space Center Houston, next door to Johnson Space Center, ranked near the bottom of the list. It scored low for attendance, international visitors, museum accreditation and difficulty transporting a shuttle there. Museums in Chicago, Seattle, Riverside, Calif., San Diego and McMinnville, Ore., all scored higher than Houston.

Bolden, who lived in Houston for many years as an astronaut and Marine and still has a home there, told investigators that personally, "I would have loved to have placed an Orbiter in Houston," but that it had lower attendance and fewer international visitors than the winners.

After the report was released, Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, criticized the selection process.

"It's clear to me this was rigged from the beginning and it was pretty clear Houston would not receive the orbiter," he said.

The 30-year space shuttle program ended with the last flight in July.

The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum had already been promised one shuttle for its hangar in Dulles, Va. It will get Discovery, and give up the Enterprise, a test vehicle that never flew in orbit. That will be shipped to the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum in New York City. Atlantis will stay in Cape Canaveral and go to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Endeavour will go to the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

The Florida and California museums, but not the Smithsonian, will have to pay at least $20 million to make the shuttles that flew in space safe for display ? removing toxic materials and fuels ? and transportation costs. NASA is picking up the tab for the Smithsonian. The shuttles are all still at Kennedy Space Center being decommissioned.

Organizations Primed for Broader Use of Unified Communications ...

Downers Grove, IL (PRWEB) June 20, 2011

Deployment of unified communications solutions is poised for growth as organizations build on a foundation of voice and data applications to include more video, collaboration and social communications tools, according to new research from CompTIA, the non-profit association for the information technology (IT) industry.

Nearly half (49 percent) of the organizations surveyed for the new CompTIA study, Unified Communications and Collaboration Market Trends, said their expenditures on unified communications technologies will grow relatively faster than their overall IT budget over the next 12 months.

Large firms (500 or more employees) are significantly more likely to increase their unified communications investment relative to the overall IT budget than the smallest of firms (1-49 employees), 64 percent vs. 35 percent.

?This likely reflects the complexity of communications at a large firm compared to a small firm,? said Tim Herbert, vice president, research, CompTIA. ?More staff, more locations, more end-points and possibly more IT systems make for a more complex communications landscape and a stronger desire to simplify through a unified communications strategy.?

IT channel companies express similar positive sentiments about growth in unified communications adoption. Among IT firms with a unified communications practice, 31 percent expect significant growth in their practice over the next 12 months, while 59 percent expect modest growth. Few expect a drop-off in their unified communications business.

While IT companies and their customers are bullish on the future of unified communications, the CompTIA study indicates that greater clarity about what constitutes unified communications is needed.

From the IT channel perspective, technology product and solution providers also have several hurdles to overcome with customers. These customer challenges include price sensitivity, cited by 39 percent of channel respondents; reliability concerns (36 percent); security concerns (34 percent); difficulty in quantifying return on investment (33 percent); and a general lack of understanding of unified communications products and services (32 percent)

Defining Unified Communications

Customers and their technology partners are fairly consistent when asked to define unified communications. For each group, core areas include e-mail, web conferencing, unified messaging, video conferencing, audio conferencing and IP communications.

But despite the media attention of technologies such as social communication and location-based services, they are not yet strongly associated with unified communications, according to the CompTIA study.

Additionally, fewer respondents have made the leap from viewing unified communications as an incremental improvement for interaction and sharing to the higher-level communications-enabled business processes. This is seen in the relatively lower numbers of respondents making a strong connection between unified communications with other enterprise systems such as customer relationship management tools.

Many of the technologies associated with unified communications are already widely adopted, according to the CompTIA study. For example, 64 percent of organizations surveyed have Web conferencing; 58 percent, use video conferencing; 54 percent, collaboration applications or platforms; and 51 percent, voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephony.

?The integration of all these elements is the hard part, tying all these things together,? said Seth Robinson, director, technology analysis, CompTIA. ?Voice and data will still be important, but more effort will be devoted to complement them by bringing more video, collaboration and social elements into the enterprise.?

Before this can happen, however, organizations must perform a network analysis to determine if their network can support the requirements for new solutions.

?Voice and video are the components of a solution that will drive network upgrades since they consume the most bandwidth and must be handled properly to assure high quality,? Robinson explained.

Indeed, among companies in the CompTIA study who have installed a VoIP solution, 61 percent upgraded network equipment such as routers and switches; and 51 percent upgraded infrastructure, such as cabling and network drops.

CompTIA?s Unified Communications and Collaboration Market Trends study is based on separate online surveys of 600 IT and business executives involved in their organization?s communications initiatives or strategies and 300 companies in the IT channel. Surveys were conducted in March. The complete report is available at no cost to CompTIA members who can access the file at http://www.CompTIA.org or by contacting research@comptia.org.

Most higher training wellness services also have affiliations with close by hospitals delivering counseling and educational well-being programs. Some universities or colleges may well also have their private hospital or an extensive well being treatment facility and the most recent technological equipments, specifically if they specialize in offering health care education and learning or courses.

Casey Anthony reports to Fla. probation officer

Florida authorities said Thursday that Casey Anthony was polite and cooperative during a meeting with her probation officer and pledged to meet the conditions of her one-year probation for check fraud.

The 25-year-old Anthony, who has remained hidden since a jury acquitted her of killing her daughter, met with the officer for more than an hour Wednesday evening at an undisclosed location as she begins her probation. But citing death threats against her, state officials said they will not reveal her location, including the county where she will serve her probation for the unrelated charge.

"She told the probation officer that she intended to do well on probation, she was polite and cooperative," said Gretl Plessinger, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Corrections.

Since the acquittal, Anthony has received death threats and remains at risk, state officials said.

"The court made a pretty strong statement, talking about the fact that she is among the most hated women in America," Plessinger said.

Story: Casey Anthony loses appeal on probation

While under state supervision, Anthony will be required to report to her probation officer once a month, get permission to travel outside the county where she lives and actively seek work or enroll in school, Plessinger said.

Anthony has not yet made a request to go to school, although in the future she may choose to enroll in an online school, according to Tampa Bay Online.

Anthony dropped from public view following her release from jail on July 17, and her lawyers confirmed she had moved out of state. But earlier this month, a judge ordered her to return to report for a year of probation for check fraud.

Video: Judge: Casey Anthony must return to Florida (on this page)

Anthony's attorneys argued she already had completed it while in jail awaiting her murder trial. The Fifth District Court of Appeals disagreed with the argument that enforcing the probation order would violate the constitutional prohibition on double jeopardy.

Circuit Judge Stan Strickland said in January 2010 that Anthony should serve probation after her release from jail. She had pleaded guilty to stealing checks from a friend. His instructions never made it into a written order and corrections officials interpreted the sentence to mean Anthony could serve the probation while she was in jail.

Story: Casey Anthony's car crushed for scrap metal

In an order this month, Strickland clarified that Anthony must begin her probation now that she is out of jail. He then recused himself from the case and turned it over to Judge Belvin Perry, who presided over Anthony's murder trial. Perry upheld Strickland's order, and Anthony's attorneys appealed last week to the Fifth District Court of Appeals in Daytona Beach. The appeals court denied a request that would have stopped her from being forced to start probation by the end of the week.

As part of her probation, Anthony must report no later than the fifth day of each month to her probation officer, whose identity is also being kept under wraps. She will be required to pay $20 a month toward the cost of her supervision.

Despite worries about her safety, Anthony will not be escorted by police to and from her home to her meetings, reported Tampa Bay Online.

Anthony agreed to warrant-less searches and drug screenings. She cannot consume alcohol in excess and must stay away from anybody engaged in criminal activity.

"We want to make sure that she is treated like other offenders," Plessinger said. "If she violates these court orders, we will immediately notify the court, but we will take security measures ... as the court has laid out."

Reuters and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Dwarf Planet Pluto Holds Big Surprises for Speedy NASA Probe (SPACE.com)

Pluto may be small, but it is proving to be big on surprises. With NASA's New Horizons spacecraft now speeding toward it, our understanding of the dwarf planet should transform even further.

"We've never had a reconnaissance of a dwarf planet such as Pluto before, and every time we've been to a new type of planet, we find nature is much richer than we expected," New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern, of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., told SPACE.com.

New Horizons, which was sent aloft in 2006, has been billed by NASA as its fastest spacecraft ever launched from Earth, having sped from our planet at about 36,000 mph (nearly 58,000 kph). The probe should reach Pluto and its moons in July 2015. [Photos of Pluto and Its Moons]

The first good look at Pluto

New Horizons will be the first up-close reconnaissance of Pluto in history. It will mark one of the first times scientists get to study a new type of planet this close since the 1970s, when NASA explored the giant planet Jupiter. (NASA's Dawn probe is slated to visit the rocky dwarf planet Ceres, the largest asteroid in the solar system, in February 2015).

Scientists have already discovered that Pluto apparently changes colors seasonally and has geysers erupting from its surface. As for what might come next, "we don't know for sure what we'll find out there, which is what is so exciting about the mission," Stern said.

While Pluto may be small, it has no dearth of moons. In addition to the three moons known since the mid-2000s ? Nix, Hydra and its largest, Charon, which is half the size of Pluto ? scientists recently discovered a fourth, simply called "P4" for now.

"We should expect Pluto to reveal how complex dwarf planet systems can be," Stern said. "We may even find rings around Pluto."

Binary planet

In addition, unlike any world explored to date, Pluto forms a binary planet with Charon. Their gravitational balance point, or barycenter, lies between the two bodies. In comparison, the barycenter of the Earth and moon lies beneath the Earth's surface. [Pluto: A Dwarf Planet Oddity (Infographic)]

Binary planets are thought to be common in the galaxy, as are binary stars, but no spacecraft has yet explored one. New Horizons will be the first mission to a binary object of any type.

"Before space exploration, the thought was that smaller worlds would be less complex than larger ones," Stern said. "But one of the surprises that came with the exploration of planets is that smaller worlds are often extremely complex, sometimes more than bigger worlds."

Atmosphere of Pluto ... and Charon?

New Horizons carries a variety of sensors "that will let us map the geology and composition and atmosphere and temperature of Pluto, as well as the objects in its system," Stern said.

Pluto's atmosphere is escaping to space like a comet's, but on a planetary scale ? a phenomenon unlike anything else in the solar system.

New Horizons may discover that Charon has an atmosphere as well, albeit an extraordinarily thin one. By studying these atmospheres, scientists might learn more about how the one on our planet ? the thin skin that protects us from the void of space, enabling life to take root ? evolved.

Internet and Businesses Online: Product Launching Article Category ...

Melaleuca is a company that offers a complete solution to anyone looking to save money and help the environment. Unlike most MLM companies which offer only a handful of products that offer a specific benefit, the melaleuca business has a wide variety of chemists, scientists and researchers and is always developing new and revolutionary products. They offer over 400 all natural products for your home, your health and for women to stay young and beautiful. The melaleuca business is a 25 year old company and their most popular products would have to be their flagship cleaning products.

If you?re looking to make money on the internet with your melaleuca business the first thing you?ll need to do is get familiar with your products. Although melaleuca has a renowned compensation plan, the internet is all about branding yourself as an expert and helping others solve a problem. The melaleuca business makes this process very easy because they have hundreds of products for you to choose from. Just choose a small group of 1 to 2 or a handful of products that you can stay excited and passionate about then channel your marketing efforts towards those benefits.

Get to know your audience. Get to know your competition. Find out what their fears are and the root problems are that they?re looking to solve. As a distributor in the melaleuca business, you make more money when more products are being ordered by your downline. Melaleuca does not pay out high enrollment fees because they don?t want to associate themselves with any type of pyramid scheme. There are many free and paid ways to marketing on the internet and each method has their advantages and disadvantages. Free internet marketing requires time and effort, and the other method requires money. Regardless of which method you choose to market your melaleuca business, both methods require practice and developing a skill set.

Finding internet leads for your melaleuca business is only 1 of 2 difficult things you?ll need in order to have financial success. The second skill you?ll need to master is knowing what to say to get enrollments and training the people you enroll. You?ll need to set up a replicable system in order to accomplish this task. A replicable system is slightly different from a duplicable system. Although duplication is often talked about, I highly discourage it when growing your melaleuca business. Always remember that leads don?t make you money. Enrollments do.

Replication simply means creating a tested and proven system that can be used among everyone you enroll. This system would teach others how to market, how to speak to prospects, and how to get enrollments, then they will plug their enrollments into the same system. To learn more about this process of growing your melaleuca business, Please download my Free Report at titled ?How to Enroll 3 Reps A Day? at http://www.mlmeasystreet.com

Parents on Facebook, a recipe for humiliation

As a teenager, the most effective weapon in my parents? arsenal of humiliation was ?the Stealth? ? a haggard 1987 Pontiac Bonneville with an uneven coat of black spray paint whose lacquered finish gave the vehicle a dripping-wet look.

Not surprisingly, being dropped off at school in the Stealth, with its missing hubcaps and angular body resembling the infamous military spy plane, was rarely a clandestine affair, especially when my father lingered in the parking lot honking as I ducked behind cars in an attempt to hide.

Attending college on the other side of the country granted me a temporary reprieve from my family?s errant behavior. then Mark Zuckerberg decided to revolutionize the way human beings interact, sacrificing a generation of young people?s autonomy in the process (or something to that effect).

These days, baby boomers don?t need a beat-up clunker to humiliate their kids; they?ve got Facebook.

Take my mother, for example. Last week she left a series of obscure messages ? complete with misspellings ? on a family member?s page using hip-hop-inspired verbiage that left her kids wondering if her account had been hacked or we were witnessing the beginning stages of Alzheimer?s (not to mention when she began labeling things ?wack?).

Then there?s my uncle, a retired high school coach turned online matchmaker, who is arguably the family?s worst offender. He has a habit of ?friending? women on Facebook in hopes of introducing them to his single son and nephew before another economic downturn finds us back on his living-room couch eating microwave nachos and watching Slamball reruns on DVD, our prospects for procreation officially scuttled. each time I stop by his home he flips open his laptop, logs onto Facebook and demands that I guess his new friend?s age and relationship status before excitedly revealing photos of obese boyfriends.

?This guy has a hot girlfriend,? he twanged recently, gesturing toward a hulking galumph whose beady eyes were tucked beneath a bony eyebrow ridge straight out of the Paleolithic Era. ?How come you don?t??

And finally, there is Jim, a longtime family friend and retired public educator in his late 60s. An hour rarely passes without Jim?s using Facebook to illuminate some darkened corner of his psyche that nobody else wants to see. Inevitably, his posts fall within one of three categories:

1) Self-portraits: mostly of Jim and his wife displaying cloying matrimonial affection, including close-ups of their mouths pressed together or their pudgy fingers interlocked.

2) Innocuous musings: My favorite was a post last month: ?Wonder if Costco is giving out oatmeal snacks today??

3) Private innuendo: These are written to his wife, often while the couple is in the same room, such as this post on the Fourth of July: ?Lori?I?m laying in bed?come enjoy the fireworks with me?hehehe?

Considering Facebook was originally designed for college kids, you might say it?s prematurely graying.

Of the roughly 150 million Facebook users in the United States, about 28 million of them are older than 45, according to statistics from inside Facebook. At 10.5 million, the number of users between 55 and 64 is only 4 million users shy of the 13-17 age group, providing further evidence that the site is no longer the sole domain of young people.

As it turns out, I?m not the only ageist who tenses up each time I get email alerting me to the fact that someone born before LBJ?s presidency has commented on one of my posts or tagged me in a photo.

The site ?Oh Crap. My Parents Joined Facebook? compiles Facebook faux pas of the parental variety. ?Family. Can?t Facebook with ?em, can?t unFriend ?em!? the homepage announces.

In one example, a Facebook user?s father joins the group ?Swingers in your area,? which is automatically posted to his public to see. In another, a mother named Cindy leaves the following message on her kid?s wall: ?The dentist called you are due for a cleaning.?

Harmless? Probably. Mortifying? Definitely.

MyParentsJoinedFacebook.com has 558 ?Likes? on Facebook. By comparison, the page ?I love that my parents are cool enough for Facebook? has garnered 16.

An AOL survey released last year found that 76 percent of parents with kids on Facebook have ?friended? their teens, but 29 percent of teenagers are ready to ?un-friend? their parents and are twice as likely to want to ?un-friend? Mom versus Dad.

It?s hardly surprising, said Linda Fogg, a Facebook expert who consults for the site and travels the country holding seminars that teach parents how to use Facebook.

?We are a technologically disabled generation,? the mother of eight Facebook users said. ?Some of us have been able to keep up with Facebook, but for the majority of us it just doesn?t come naturally.?

In her workshops, Fogg, who is the author of Facebook for Parents: answers to the top 25 questions, teaches her pupils the basics:

Don?t post baby photos of your kids.

Don?t tag them in photos without their permission.

Don?t post reprimanding messages on their wall.

and, most importantly, learn the difference between sending a private message and a public one.

a 90-minute session is all it takes for most parents to make drastic improvements, she said.

In the majority of cases, it?s not that young people don?t want to be friends with their parents on Facebook, she said, it?s that they?re terrified of being embarrassed by them. Often, she added, they have good reason to be.

?If we are adults and we can behave ourselves, the kids like having us there,? she said, noting that a parent/child online relationship should resemble their real-life relationship. ?It shows them we care. it can strengthen your bond, but there are boundaries.?

Fogg should know. Her 20-year-old daughter un-friended her after she was tagged in a photo somewhere she wasn?t supposed to be and Fogg confronted her. a fight ensued, and it took some time for Fogg?s daughter to trust that her mom wouldn?t be the Big Brother of her Facebook account. These days, she is a shadow on her kids? wall, intervening in private when necessary.

?They know how to post and tag photos and use the site more easily than their parents,? she said. ?But they don?t always have the wisdom to ask whether a photo is going to affect their college applications or what kind of digital footprint they?re leaving.?

Paul Saffo, a technology forecaster who teaches at Stanford University, said that digital footprint could put young people at risk for decades to come. He expects we?ll see a burgeoning industry in companies that erase your digital past, such as the website reputation .com, which sells ?online reputation management.? In the meantime, he said, parents should familiarize themselves with their kids? online activity.

?Middle-aged people are the digital homeless,? he said. ?Kids and retirees have the time to figure this technology out, but people in the middle have more important things to worry about, like bills and mortgages.?

It doesn?t help, he said, that Facebook?s formerly clean design has been compromised by games, quizzes and new programs that can turn off the average adult.

?After a while you get tired of being ?poked? and having virtual pies thrown in your face,? he said.

At this point, Saffo said, social media sites such as Facebook are in the midst of a familiar cycle. with the introduction of a popular new technology, society reinvents itself around that technology and social norms evolve. once that happens, technology, in turn, reinvents itself around society.

?Think about what the automobile did for teenage dating,? he said.

But this social restructuring, in which media such as Facebook alter the way parents and kids define behavioral norms, will take some time to figure out. Right now, he said, Facebook is still an ?untamed wild animal.?

5 Reasons to Use Internet Fax | Local CFL

There was once a time when a telex machine was cutting edge office technology for communications. now the choices are endless ? faxes, e-mails, instant messaging, text messaging, among other methods. and even the way people use fax communication is changing. Businesses are now moving away from traditional paper and toner faxing for something better. The internet fax has a lot of benefits that make it a better choice for business ? environmental stewardship, cost savings, efficiency, organization, and security.

  1. Internet fax is environmentally friendly in that it essentially does away with fax paper and toner cartridges. The receiver can review faxes as they come in and decide which messages should be printed and which ones should be saved on the computer or deleted. The environmental benefit is actually two-fold. first it eliminates the need for toner and paper, reducing the amount of resources consumed for the production of those items. Secondly it reduces the number of actual fax machines that have to be manufactured and then disposed of in landfills.
  2. From the cost savings standpoint, internet fax is a godsend. Just as eliminating toner cartridges from landfills is good for the planet, it?s also good for the bottom line of a business. when considering the hundreds of dollars a year in toner and paper consumed by even the smallest businesses, the savings can add up. it also means less employee time wasted in changing toner frequently, or in dislodging paper jams. In addition to introducing this element of economy into the picture, faxing over the internet provides a nice element of control. Businesses can now mercifully be spared the guerilla tactics of blitz marketers who jam up people?s faxes with offers of cheap health insurance or vacations in Orlando. The internet fax makes such annoyances a thing of the past.
  3. The efficiency of sending and receiving faxes is enhanced with the internet fax. Senders won?t receive busy signals. They won?t have to hit the automatic redial button and then wonder when an urgent document would reach its recipient. The elimination of the proverbial log jam experienced by offices during periods of busy traffic can result in increased efficiency, as well as the benefit of not losing business due to busy signals. That last element in itself can be so profound as to eclipse many of the other advantages of the faxing over the internet.
  4. From an organizational standpoint, the internet fax also imparts an element of order into the busy stream of faxes received by the typical small business every day. All those faxes can easily be categorized into folders that make file management under Windows or other operating systems much easier. This is definitely a preferable alternative to maintaining paper copies that can be lost or misfiled more easily. In addition to an office?s own electronic filing system, the server of the service provider can be a trusty back-up.
  5. From the standpoint of security, the internet fax is vastly superior to its traditional paper fax counterpart. when a document is received, it goes straight to the computer of a specific end user (unless of course copies are deliberately intended for others). This means that confidential information is not lying on the floor after falling off the fax table. aside from the ethical obligation to protect the confidentiality of sensitive information, faxing over the Internet can reduce the chances that a business will be sued because someone?s personal information was found in a dumpster outside the building.

Bachelor Pad's Chris Harrison Calls Kasey the Godfather of the House (omg!)

This week's episode of Bachelor Pad showed that while some contestants will do anything for money, some will give up everything for love. Host Chris Harrison talks to TVGuide.com about Ames' grand exit to be with Jackie, his new love who was eliminated at the end of the episode. Plus: Harrison explains a component to the challenge viewers didn't see, how Vienna tried to stage a walkout and why next week's challenge is both the funniest and saddest in Bachelor history.

How did they get the paint in those eggs?
Chris Harrison: The award goes to our art department. I think they poked tiny holes in them and, with a syringe, shot it in.

Is Bachelor Pad on your Watchlist? Add it and your other favorites now and never miss an episode

Why didn't everyone just aim for someone in the middle which gives you with a better chance of hitting someone?
Harrison:
You couldn't just throw. Every time they walked out I asked the question and they had to non-verbally answer with the number of who they were going for. I answered back to be clear because if you threw the egg and it hit somebody other than [the number they held up with their fingers] it didn't count.

You announced that two women would be eliminated this week. Was that change made to keep Jake in the house?
Harrison:
The plan is never set. We have an idea of how we want it to go, but until you see how things are going and you see how people are acting and how the game is playing out, then those twists and turns are added. They're definitely not last-minute, like: Oh, Jake's about to leave, let's do this. You can't change the game to that degree. But as we see things that might happen a week in advance or several days in advance, we can change the script a bit and change the game a bit as long as we stick to our rules and everyone has an equal chance to win. They know that anything can happen at any time.

VIDEO: Bachelor Pad's Graham Bunn dishes on his partnership with Michelle Money

Were you taken aback by Vienna claiming that the show was "cheating?"
Harrison:
You can play the victim all you want ... but if you're going to start accusing the show I'm not going to stand for it. Who's keeping you here? .That's why when she said that, I said, "If you don't like it, then leave." Literally, she was trying to have this coup d'etat and stage a walkout. ... it's not the last temper tantrum that a houseguest will have this season.

Are you surprised she still refuses to speak to Jake?
Harrison:
I'm surprised overall that she just won't let it go and she just won't bury the hatchet. In her defense, I think she's acting out of emotion, and I don't think she's taking under consideration the public perception of her. She has to realize she's on a show and even if you don't want this closure with Jake, when he comes up to you five times and you diss him like that, it's going to be perceived pretty badly.

Bachelor Pad's Chris Harrison: Jake giving Vienna the immunity rose was "genuinely stupid"

What about Kasey's game moves this week?
Harrison: It's impressive how he's the Godfather of the house right now. It's funny how Vienna thinks she's really a part of it too, but she's really not. She doesn't realize how much Kasey is really the one in control of this game, at least up until this point. He's played it beautifully, I have to say.

Did you expect Gia to leave the show?
Harrison: That got out of hand so quickly and I have no idea how she went from zero to I'm leaving. She got caught ... trying to strategize and break up Kasey and Vienna, and then when Graham and Kasey played the game better than her, she got pissed, upset, her feelings got hurt and she left. I think it was more, "I'm about to be voted out so instead of losing, I quit."

How incredible was Ames' exit?
Harrison: That was one of the greatest moves I've seen in Bachelor history. Ames showed that, "I don't need this, it's not going to change my life that much, but leaving here with my dignity and with my love is more important." It was a storybook moment only Ames [could do], it was a beautiful moment and funny to see the cast applauding.

What can you say about next week?
Harrison: Next week is synchronized swimming and it's the funniest, saddest moment in Bachelor history. We have a couple of familiar faces come in and judge and we also have some pros. To see the guys in a synchronized swimming outfit is wrong in so many ways. Some of those Speedos were a little more see-through then they should've been ?there's not a lot left to the imagination.
