Amsterdam News.net Saturday 23rd June, 2012

A former Pennsylvania State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, 68, has been convicted on child abuse charges.

A US jury found Sandusky had sexually abused young boys throughout his time in the coaching position, which spanned fifteen years.

Once well regarded as a sporting icon, Sandusky could spend the rest of his life in prison.

The jury found Sandusky Guilty of 45 charges as they deliberated over seven days of testimony.

The lawyers for Sandusky have described the conviction as a "disappointment" and will now launch an appeal.

As a once-popular figure who was also known for his charitable work, Sandusky's case captured the attention of the US public as he had worked so closely in a teaching role with children and young men.

In a statement from Penn State University, President Rodney Erickson said the university accepted responsibility for taking action on child sexual abuse.

Sandusky's sentencing will be in September.
