'Band of Brothers' soldier dies at 90 in Wash. (omg!)

BURLINGTON, Wash. (AP) ? Lynn D. "Buck" Compton, a veteran whose World War II exploits were depicted in the HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers," has died, his family said.

Compton died Saturday in Burlington, Wash., after having a heart attack last month, the family told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/AmfhYe ) in a story Tuesday.

In January, nearly 200 guests, including actors from the miniseries, attended his 90th birthday party, the Skagit Valley Herald (http://is.gd/XScV1b ) reported.

"To us he wasn't really a war hero, he was just a hero, period," Tracy Compton told the Herald.

Lynn Compton also is remembered for his legal career in California. He headed the team that prosecuted Sirhan B. Sirhan for the slaying of Robert F. Kennedy and was appointed to the 2nd District Court of Appeal in 1970 by Gov. Ronald Reagan. He retired from the bench in 1990.

He was awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart during World War II. But it wasn't until later in life that he became famous for his military service as a first lieutenant in Easy Company after the unit parachuted into France on D-Day in 1944. Historian Stephen E. Ambrose's 1992 best seller about the unit was made into the 2001 TV series.

"His career as a prosecutor and a judge overrode his military career until 'Band of Brothers' came out, and then it just went crazy," daughter Syndee Compton said.

Compton was embarrassed by the attention at his birthday party at Skagit Regional Airport that was attended by children of other Band of Brothers veterans.

"All I can say is it's flattering ? and kind of embarrassing," Compton told the Herald. "We didn't expect anything more than those other guys (in the war). We're celebrating longevity more than anything."

The guests included "Band of Brothers" actors Michael Cudlitz, James Madio, Richard Speight Jr. and Neal McDonough, who portrayed Compton in the miniseries.

McDonough recalled meeting with Compton the day before he flew to London to begin filming "Band of Brothers," and later peppering him with questions about his time during the war.

"When you play a historical figure, you have to do it right and tell the truth," McDonough told the Times, recalling that Compton told him he was just doing his job.

"He'd say that's what soldiers do," said McDonough, who kept in touch with Compton and nicknamed his 6-year-old son Morgan "Little Buck" in his honor.

Tracy Compton said her father thought McDonough did a wonderful job portraying him and that "he laughed and said Neal was better-looking than he ever was."

Compton was born in Los Angeles on Dec. 31, 1921. He majored in physical education and minored in education at UCLA, where he lettered in football and baseball. He started at guard in the 1943 Rose Bowl game against Georgia and was selected all-conference catcher while captain of the baseball team in 1942.

He also participated in the ROTC program and entered active service in February 1943 at age 21.

After the war, he became a Los Angeles police officer and worked his way through Loyola Law School. He was a detective in the Central Burglary Division before joining the district attorney's office in 1951. He was assistant district attorney when District Attorney Evelle J. Younger chose him as his chief deputy in 1966.

Compton's memoir "Call of Duty: My Life Before, During and After the Band of Brothers," written with Marcus Brotherton, was published in 2008.

His wife, Donna, died in 1994. Along with his two daughters, he is survived by four grandchildren.

ASUS outs lower-end Transformer Pad 300 tablet with 16GB of storage and a 1280 x 800 display

Remember when we said ASUS was adding another tablet to its stable? Let's bump that number to an even two. ASUS just announced the Transformer Pad 300, a lower-end match to the new Infinity Series (and also made a quick appearance earlier this month). Hilariously (if rapidly aging gadgets can ever be funny), the 300 is, for all intents and purposes, a watered-down version of the original Transformer Prime -- until recently the most lustworthy tablet. So far as we can tell, the only differences are that it offers different color choices (blue, white and red), a slightly downgraded display and optional LTE. Also, the back is made of plastic. Once again, it has a Tegra 3 chip, 8MP / 2MP cameras, HDMI and a 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 IPS display. Interestingly, this guy has a regular 'ole IPS screen, not the 600-nit Super IPS+ panel used on the original Prime and the new Infinity tab. The 300 also comes with a fixed 16GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD), whereas the original Prime packed 32GB at the lower end. Still, ASUS won't skimp on some things: it ships with ICS, like its brother, and promises up to 10 hours of battery life (that's 15 with the optional keyboard dock, which is an hour less than what the Infinity Series claims). No word yet on availability, so expect some further announcements in the coming months with pricing specific to different regions.

Post-Op pathology report shows cancer not encapsulated in prostate so what are the options now?

My husband had his prostate removed thinking we caught his cancer early enough, however, the post-op pathology report states cancer was no longer encapsulated in the prostate and mentions HGPIN. His presurgical PSA was 3.9 and Gleason was 3+3. Post-op Gleason 3+4 and PSA test won't be done until 5-6 weeks after surgery. If his PSA confirms the cancer has spread what are treatment options and what would be the outcome regarding urinary and fecal continence?

Sony: GEMA is costing us millions in Germany

Edgar Berger, Sony Music?s CEO of international business has admitted that GEMA is hurting them financially by restricting access of digital content online.

Because of GEMA, thousands of music videos are blocked on YouTube in Germany.

Sony: GEMA is costing us millions in Germany

Berger spoke about the disruption caused by the internet for the music industry:

There is absolutely nothing to complain about. The Internet is a great stroke of luck for the music industry, or better: the Internet is a blessing for us. You can not blame the Internet for harmful excesses. On the contrary. It has brought us tremendous new opportunities.

He spoke about GEMA:

It?s not because of us. You must direct this question to the German collecting agency GEMA, they licensed the copyright very restrictively.

He added:

We want to see streaming services like Vevo and Spotify in the German market. [These platforms] must not be blocked by GEMA any longer. Artists and music companies are losing sales in the millions.

Apparently, GEMA is asking for too much money for the rights to broadcast music and videos in Germany which makes little financial sense for companies like YouTube. And as a result they are blocked.

Apple releases EFI firmware updates for 2011 Macs, fixes bugs
If you're anything like us, your inner-geek revels in hearing rare system beeps while holding down obscure key combos that only occur while updating low-level firmware. While much of those theatrics have since disappeared in the modern era, those of you with 2011 iMacs, Mac Minis, MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs can at least relive some of that nostalgia as you update them to their latest respective EFI firmwares. There's four versions (one for each machine, naturally), yet Apple tells us they all address the same underlying problems, including improving "the reliability of booting from the network" in addition to addressing "an issue that can prevent HDCP authentication" after reboots. Finally, there's improvements pertaining to "boot device selection when a USB storage device is hot-plugged." Direct links to the respective support pages are below, or those seeking to avoid guesswork can simply go on ahead and fire up Software Update. Your call.

Eire Takes Action on Personal Insolvency Laws | Finance @ Redbright

Inside this year the Irish government is supposed to pass new personal insolvency laws. A final draft of a Personal Insolvency Bill is expected to be released by the end of April 2012, a month after the EU, ECB and IMF had formerly asked, as a condition of Ireland?s bailout. The first draft of the legislation was released at the end of January 2012 and a process of consultation is presently ongoing with interested groups and individuals. The stakes are high and many consumers are troubled that there might be a lack of balance in the measures that may be ultimately enacted if lenders particularly have too significant a say in finalizing the laws. The draft legislation is now being compared to existing EU law and practice and there are a lot of obvious differences from mainstream insolvency legislation in the UK and in the rest of the EU. The draft bill comprises four main personal insolvency options. The government?s approach looks to be that private indebtedness ought to be classified in accordance with the magnitude of the liabilities; the type of the indebtedness i.e. secured or unsecured debt; the magnitude of the debtor?s income, the worth of the debtor?s property and the prospects for the debtor becoming solvent over a foreseeable time period. The first three solutions are completely new in Ireland and the fourth option consists of just some minor changes to the old bankruptcy legislation. Here?s a review of the four draft proposals as they are right now and a short description of a fifth method of managing debt problems is also given at the end, although it is not contained in the steps being proposed under the the latest draft legislation.

Debt Relief Certificate ? The Debt Relief Certificate is quite similar to the Debt Relief Order in the UK and applies to individuals whose income is modest, who have almost no property and whose personal financial obligations are at a fairly small level. So long as obligations do not go higher than 20,000, the value of assets doesn?t surpass 400 (aside from a vehicle of maximum worth 1,200) and monthly disposable income doesn?t go over 60, then the debtor may be eligible for a Debt Relief Certificate for which they can apply with the help of an authorized intermediary. The all inclusive costs of applying for a Debt Relief Certificate is 90. If an applicant meets the essential criteria for the Debt Relief Certificate they will see all their debts frozen for one year. If the applicant?s circumstances have not materially improved and he or she is still unable to pay the money they owe after twelve months, debts that qualify are completely cancelled. A minimum of six years must elapse before a debtor is permitted to make application for a second Debt Relief Certificate and citizens are allowed only two Debt Relief Certificates in their lifetime. This solution will not be available to homeowners.

Debt Settlement Arrangement ? The Debt Settlement Arrangement is very like the IVA in the UK. Application for a Debt Settlement Arrangement can be made by an insolvent debtor who?s got entire unsecured obligations of over 20,000. With the assistance of a personal insolvency trustee, the consumer can apply for a protective certificate while the Debt Settlement Arrangement is being got ready. This forbids creditors from undertaking any measures for the recovery of debts for thirty working days. According to this scheme creditors are sent a Debt Settlement Arrangement proposal providing for payments to be made by the borrower for a duration of five years. Creditors may consent to prolong this period for a further twelve months. This repayment will only be a percentage of what is actually due. For the Debt Settlement Arrangement to be approved, no less than 65% of voting lenders must support it. Lenders are accorded voting privileges strictly in accordance with the sum of their debts. All lenders are bound by the decision of those lenders who choose to exercise their vote.

Personal Insolvency Arrangement ? There?s no consumer debt remedy in the UK that is actually very similar to the Personal Insolvency Arrangement. This is because the Personal Insolvency Arrangement deals with secured debt as well as unsecured debt in an innovative and new way. This option refers to insolvent individuals whose total secured and unsecured liabilities total greater than 20,000 and total less than 3million. With the assistance of a personal insolvency trustee, the consumer can apply for a protective certificate while the Debt Settlement Arrangement is being got ready. This thwarts lenders from undertaking any steps for the recovery of outstanding debts for sixty days. Unsecured lenders are offered an agreed percentage of what they are owed and an offer to pay this over a fixed period is made. If the person in debt is in adverse equity in regard to one or more secured properties for instance a mortgaged home, the proposal could include provisions for writing down a portion of the mortgage, and for lowering mortgage payments by extending the repayment period for a number of additional years. For the Personal Insolvency Arrangement to be accepted, the applicant will require the support of at least 65% ( in terms of value) of all voting lenders both secured and unsecured. In addition at least 75% of secured creditors who choose to vote and at least 55% of unsecured creditors who choose to vote must vote in favour of the Personal Insolvency Arrangement proposal. The Personal Insolvency Arrangement will normally operate for a term of six years but it may be extended by an additional year. A debtor may enter into a Personal Insolvency Arrangement only once in his or her lifetime unless exceptional or other external factors caused the debtor?s insolvency.

Bankruptcy ? Amendments to the old Bankruptcy Laws are the final changes proposed to be made in the new Personal Insolvency Bill. One effect of these changes is that, if an insolvent debtor owes less than 20,000, a creditor won?t in future be able to petition a court for bankruptcy although such insolvent individuals may themselves petition for bankruptcy. If a bankruptcy order is made, all of the assets of the individual will fall under the power of an Official Assignee (OA) and the debtor may have to make payments from their surplus income to the OA for between three and eight years. Regardless of how long the payments from income go on for, automatic discharge from bankruptcy can take place after three years. This is considerably less than the minimum of twelve years that it currently takes for discharge from bankruptcy in Ireland.

Debt Management Plan ? The draft bill recently published by the Irish Government incorporates no legislative proposals relating to informal debt management. This is rather surprising since the most widespread personal debt solution currently available in Ireland is the Debt Management Plan. A Debt Management Plan is an informal but flexible debt solution whereby the consumer offers to pay lenders what they can afford. The affordable payment is what is left from income after all living costs are considered. Living costs are based on agreement between creditors and debtors in accordance with standards and guidelines largely developed by the lenders. The term of a Debt Management Plan can be quite long but since it is informal, the consumer or any lender can decide to opt out at any stage. While lenders often agree to freeze interest and penalties while the Debt Management Plan is running, this is not assured. Even when such a freeze is agreed, if the Debt Management Plan ceases to run, creditors will normally and typically re-impose penalties and charges on any remaining unpaid amounts of funds due to them.

Outstanding debts in Ireland can now be resolved with several different debt schemes coming on board, including the Personal Insolvency Arrangement and the Debt Management Arrangement. National Debt Relief can help provide you with information on these solutions and help you with your financial troubles.

CINCINNATI (AP) ? A man who was threatened with jail time for posting comments about his estranged wife on his personal Facebook page unless he posted daily apologies for a month says the court ruling violates his freedom of speech.

Mark Byron, who is making the apology to avoid 60 days in jail, said Friday night that he believes it's too late for him to appeal the domestic relations court ruling as planned. But the Cincinnati man and free speech and media experts say it should concern other users of the social networking site.

With hundreds of millions of people using Facebook for communication, Byron said that "if they can do this to me, they can do it to others."

The idea "that anybody could tell you what to say to your friends on Facebook should be scary to people," said Cincinnati attorney Jill Meyer, who specializes in free speech and media issues.

The ruling is highly unusual and "troubling because it's a court telling someone to say something to ? in some regards ? his chosen group of friends," said Meyer. She noted that the comments were not directed to Byron's wife, Elizabeth Byron, who was blocked from accessing the page.

According to the ruling, Byron posted comments on his page in November, saying in part, "If you are an evil, vindictive woman who wants to ruin your husband's life and take your son's father away from him completely ? all you need to do is say you're scared of your husband or domestic partner and they'll take him away."

The Byrons are involved in ongoing divorce and child custody proceedings. Byron has said his wife and the court have prevented him from seeing his 17-month-old son many times. The court maintains he is allowed to see him on a twice-weekly basis.

Domestic Relations Magistrate Paul Meyers last month found Byron in contempt of a protective order because of his Facebook comments. Meyers said that Byron could avoid a 60-day jail sentence and a $500 fine by posting the apology ? written by Meyers ? to his wife and all of his Facebook friends and paying her attorney fees. The same apology must be posted every day no later than 9 a.m.

The June court order prohibited Byron from causing his wife physical or mental abuse, harassment or annoyance. She asked in December that he be found in contempt after learning of the Facebook comments.

Byron's comments expressed frustration, but they were not threats and he didn't make them to his wife, said Cincinnati attorney Jack Greiner, who also specializes in free speech and media issues.

Greiner said he doesn't think the First Amendment "allows a court to find that someone has harassed or caused a person to suffer mental abuse merely by expressing one's opinion about a court proceeding in a non-threatening way."

Greiner said that a court compelling speech through a court-written apology raises as many free speech concerns as actions prohibiting free speech.

The statement that Byron says he has been posting since Feb. 13 has him apologizing to his wife for "casting her in an unfavorable light" and to his Facebook friends for "attempting to mislead them. Byron said the apology forces him to make false statements.

The magistrate's assistant said Friday that Meyers cannot comment on pending court cases. Elizabeth Byron's attorney didn't immediately return calls.

The ruling says several of Mark Byron's comments were "clearly intended to be mentally abusive, harassing and annoying" to his wife and "generate a negative and venomous response toward her from his Facebook friends."

Responses by Facebook friends to his posting caused Elizabeth Byron to be "afraid and concerned," according to court documents.

Byron and his attorney, Becky Ford, say he made his comments out of frustration and never expected his wife to see them since she couldn't access his account.

"Once he made the comments, some of his Facebook friends started making inflammatory comments which he had no control over," Ford said.

His comments were "nothing other than free speech communication where he was venting truthful information," Ford said.

Bryon must appear in court March 19 and show proof that he posted the apology or face jail.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Bombs and deadly shootings relentlessly pounded Iraqis on Thursday, killing at least 55 people and wounding more than 225 in a widespread wave of violence the government called a "frantic attempt" by insurgents to prove the country will never be stable.

Cars burned, school desks were bloodied, bandaged victims lay in hospitals and pools of blood were left with the wounded on floors of bombed businesses after the daylong series of attacks in 12 cities across Iraq.

The assault demonstrated how vulnerable the country remains two months after the American military left and put the onus for protecting the public solely in the hands of Iraqi forces.

"There was no reason for this bomb. A primary school is here, students came to study and people came to work," Karim Abbas woefully said in the town of Musayyib, where he saw a car bomb parked near an elementary school kill three people and wound 73. Most of the injured in the town, located about 40 miles (60 kilometers) south of Baghdad, were schoolchildren.

Other Iraqis, fed up with the continued violence, furiously blamed security forces for letting it happen.

"We want to know: What were the thousands of policemen and soldiers in Baghdad doing today while the terrorists were roaming the city and spreading violence?" said Ahmed al-Tamimi, who was working at an Education Ministry office a block away from a restaurant bombed in the Shiite neighborhood of Kazimiyah in northern Baghdad.

He described a hellish scene of human flesh and pools of blood at the restaurant, where another car bomb killed nine people and wounded 19.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the latest attacks, but car bombs are a hallmark of al-Qaida. The Iraqi Interior Ministry blamed al-Qaida insurgents for the violence.

"These attacks are part of frantic attempts by the terrorist groups to show that the security situation in Iraq will not ever be stable," the ministry said in a statement. "These attacks are part of al-Qaida efforts to deliver a message to its supporters that al-Qaida is still operating inside Iraq, and it has the ability to launch strikes inside the capital or other cities and towns."

Fifteen of the day's 26 attacks targeted security forces on patrols, at checkpoints and around government and political offices. Six policemen were killed at their checkpoint in northern Baghdad in a pre-dawn drive-by shooting. A suicide bomber blew up his car in front of a police station in Baqouba, 35 miles (60 kilometers) northeast of Baghdad, killing two and wounding eight.

Such violence undermines the public's confidence in the ability of their policemen and soldiers to protect everyday citizens, and discourages people from joining or helping the security forces.

All the casualties were reported by local police and hospital officials in the cities where the attacks took place. Most spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

A statement by the Sunni-dominated Iraqiya political party, the main opposition bloc to the Shiite-led government, called on Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to accept full responsibility for protecting the public.

"If the government fails to do so, then it should resign and the parliament should choose a government capable of confronting the terrorists and impose security and stability in all over Iraq," the statement said.

Even months before U.S. troops left, extremists launched large-scale attacks every few weeks. The violence now is nowhere as frequent as it was during the tit-for-tat sectarian fighting that almost pushed Iraq into civil war a few years ago. But the attacks appear to be more deadly than they were before American military's withdrawal in late December.

Days after the American military left, a Dec. 22 wave of bombs targeting Shiites killed at least 69 people. That happened twice more over the following three weeks, killing 78 and 53, respectively. Al-Qaida was blamed for them all.

Until the U.S. troops left, the most sweeping attack of 2011 was in August in a multi-city bombing spree that killed 63.

The renewed potency of the violence points to a dangerous security gap that Iraqi forces have not yet solved without the help of the U.S. military: Gathering intelligence on militants plotting attacks.

Ongoing negotiations between the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and the Iraqi government are addressing, in part, how to supply security forces with enough equipment and training to conduct surveillance and reconnaissance operations.

Turbulence in Iraq's political system also has fueled sectarian tensions, but there's no indication so far that it's led to violence. The day after the U.S. withdrawal on Dec. 18, the Shiite-led government announced an arrest warrant against Iraq's highest-ranking Sunni politician, Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, on charges he commandeered death squads against security forces and government officials.

Al-Hashemi has denied the charges he calls politically motivated, and many Iraqis fear the case will bring the return of widespread sectarian violence. The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad alluded to that in a statement Thursday calling the terrorist attacks "heinous" acts that "tear at the fabric of Iraqi unity." Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi condemned the attacks as an attempt "at igniting strife among Iraqi people."

Yet in an encouraging sign that Iraq's government is able to function, Parliament late Thursday approved the nation's $100 billion operating budget for 2012.

Al-Nujaifi said Thursday's blast likely sought to frighten diplomats from attending the Arab League's annual summit, scheduled to be held in Baghdad in late March. The League meeting was canceled in Baghdad last year amid similar fears.

Douglas A. Ollivant, who oversaw Iraq policy at the National Security Council at the White House from 2008 to 2009, said that while security forces may not be able to stop al-Qaida, the violence has come nowhere close to pushing the nation back into war.

"Al-Qaida has been incredibly ineffective in its goal of renewing sectarian violence," said Ollivant, now senior fellow at the New America Foundation in Washington. "Yes, Iraq has a terrorism problem and it needs to get better at dealing with it. But al-Qaida's inability to get any traction on their larger strategy is demonstrating that the civil war in Iraq is decidedly over."

But as the burning, charred cars that littered streets across the country showed Thursday, Iraq's battle against terrorism and violence is far from over.

Infusing the arts within daily lessons is something Windsor Hill Elementary does well. More than eight-hundred students walk the halls of the school helps?students to not only discover their talents, but also discover how those talents can help them excel in the classroom. We head to Dorchester county for our Cool School of the week.

The students in music teacher Nathan Nelson's class are learning about South Carolina history, the gullah culture, and music is infused throughout the lesson. Mr. Nelson says, "The arts within itself expands the mind. History tells us by taking that and bringing it to a school, you really start to see how kids are motivated about learning, and how learning actually becomes a part of their life and their culture"

Windsor Hill Arts Infused Elementary, a pre-k through fifth grade school, implemented arts infusion five years ago, which involves the creative problem solving process. Principal Vernisa Bodison

says, "We really want our students to be critical thinkers. We want them to think analytically, so what we do is we embed art infused opportunities that they have to problem solve. It really requires them to exercise and use their higher order thinking skills and that's what we want, we want our children to be thinkers."

Teachers create lessons in their art discipline to infuse, or integrate... classroom lessons which includes drama, dance, vocal and instrumental music. Drama teacher, Kathy Summer says, "I'm teaching cause and effect. I'm teaching African American History, while I'm also doing drama, and teachers are wonderful at that in their classrooms. We make the learning, everything that we're suppose to learn here at Windsor Hill of our responsibility, and that's the beauty of it. When you walk in the door, you don't even know who the drama teacher is, and who the social studies teacher is."

So what makes Windsor Hill Arts Infused Elementary School so cool? Fifth grade student Hope Chambers says, "I think that it's actually quite fun." Fifth grade student Isaiah White says, "It's better to me than sitting in a classroom and just learning it ordinarily and not understanding it, if you go to a special area that involves the arts in learning that makes it more fun." Principal Vernisa Bodison says, "It's beautiful. It's a beautiful place, warm and loving environment. We have a culture of high expectations, and we're expecting great things from our students." Fourth grade student Cesar Palomar says, "It is very fascinating and it has a lot of stuff for the arts." Teacher Nathan Nelson says, "Arts infusion makes a whole new world for these students. Some students will never have the opportunity to afford piano lessons or to afford music lessons, or dance, and Windsor Hill gives them that opportunity throughout their work day and that's a blessing to many. It's a special school. Number one, the students that we serve here, the parents that we serve and our faculty and staff have a heart to teach, and have a heart and passion for these children in learning.

Windsor Hill Arts Infused Elementary School has four computer labs. The school also has a boys empowerment group, African drummers, girl's step team, as well as a Lego robotics team and recycling troopers.

Coming up Friday on News 2 Today, we will present Windsor Hill with our Cool School award.

We want to hear about the good things that are going on at your school. Send an email to Octavia at omitchell@wcbd.com and tell us all about it. You can also find a link to nominate your school on our Cool School page as well. Maybe your school will be the next Cool School of the week.

Google?s Diversifying Display Ad Business Could Pass Facebook?s, eMarketer Guesses

Screen Shot 2012-02-22 at 9.45.05 AMResearch firm eMarketer has put together a few interesting data points that show Google doing better in display ads than you might have realized. That is, by growing this business across properties that it at some point acquired ? YouTube, DoubleClick, and mobile (AdMob) ? it's set to pass Facebook's own display business. The social network had the highest online ad sales of any company in the US last year, at $1.73 billion. But that was a mere $200 million or so above Google. This year, eMarketer expects a similar story, with Facebook bringing in $2.58 billion versus Google's $2.54 billion. Things change in 2013 and 2014, further off from what the data can tell us accurately.

A step toward better electronics

Monday, February 20, 2012

Researchers at Northwestern University have developed a new method for chemically altering graphene, a development that could be a step toward the creation of faster, thinner, flexible electronics.

Highly desired for its many promising attributes, graphene is a one-atom thick, honeycomb-shaped lattice of carbon atoms with exceptional strength and conductivity. Among graphene's many possible applications is electronics: Many experts believe it could rival silicon, transforming integrated circuits and leading to ultra-fast computers, cellphones and related portable electronic devices.

But first, researchers must learn how to tune the electronic properties of graphene -- not an easy feat, given a major challenge intrinsic to the material. Unlike semiconductors such as silicon, pure graphene is a zero band-gap material, making it difficult to electrically "turn off" the flow of current through it. Therefore, pristine graphene is not appropriate for the digital circuitry that comprises the vast majority of integrated circuits.

To overcome this problem and make graphene more functional, researchers around the world are investigating methods for chemically altering the material. The most prevalent strategy is the "Hummers method," a process developed in the 1940s that oxidizes graphene, but that method relies upon harsh acids that irreversibly damage the fabric of the graphene lattice.

Researchers at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science have recently developed a new method to oxidize graphene without the collateral damage encountered in the Hummers method. Their oxidation process is also reversible, which enables further tunability over the resulting properties of their chemically modified graphene.

The paper, "Chemically Homogeneous and Thermally Reversible Oxidation of Epitaxial Graphene," will be published Feb. 19 in the journal Nature Chemistry.

"Performing chemical reactions on graphene is very difficult," said Mark C. Hersam, professor of materials science and engineering at the McCormick School. "Typically, researchers employ aggressive acidic conditions, such as those utilized in the Hummers method, that damage the lattice and result in a material that is difficult to control.

"In our method, however, the resulting graphene oxide is chemically homogeneous and reversible ? leading to well-controlled properties that can likely be exploited in high-performance applications," said Hersam, who is also a professor of chemistry and of medicine.

To create the graphene oxide, researchers leaked oxygen gas (O2) into an ultra-high vacuum chamber. Inside, a hot tungsten filament was heated to 1500 degrees Celsius, causing the oxygen molecules to dissociate into atomic oxygen. The highly reactive oxygen atoms then uniformly inserted into the graphene lattice.

The resulting material possesses a high degree of chemical homogeneity. Spectroscopic measurements show that the electronic properties of the graphene vary as a function of oxygen coverage, suggesting that this approach can tune the properties of graphene-based devices. "It's unclear if this work will impact real-world applications overnight," Hersam said. "But it appears to be a step in the right direction."

Next, researchers will explore other means of chemically modifying graphene to develop a wider variety of materials, much like scientists did for plastics in the last century.

"Maybe oxygen isn't enough," Hersam said. "Through chemical modification, the scientific community has developed a wide range of polymers, from hard plastics to nylon. We hope to realize the same degree of tunability for graphene."
