AHS Golf Team Prepares for Season after Passing of Coach

The Abilene High Golf team was coming into 2012 with some momentum from a strong year in 2011, But before the season could even begin Tragedy struck the program. The Head Coach, Bill Wallace died Suddenly at the age of 55.

Abilene High golfer Brian Lang couldn't believe it happened.
"It was just really shocking to hear," he said. "He was only like 55 and he was perfectly healthy, it seemed."

Fellow fellow teammate Eddie Teague said it was hard news to hear.
"It was surreal," he said. "I couldn't believe he passed away because I saw him Friday, and got the news and it was awful, couldn't take it real great."

Stewart Angeo, another AHS golfer said it was a tough day when he found out.
"It made an impact that day especially," he said. "Because, I mean, they told us pretty early on in the day so we still had to go for a full day of school. It just -- I don't know, It was hard to take that day."

With the sudden loss of their coach, the players were forced to step back and look at things a little differently.

"I take how he always looked at every day," Teague said. "Everyday he was always smiling."

"We want to go out there and do well for him," Angeo said, "And we'll just try to remember what he told us always and remember how he told us to play the courses and how to hold ourselves and compose ourselves."

The AHS Golf team's number one player, Ebaldo Olague, admired Wallace's Love for the game.

"His love for the game. He always enjoyed taking us to tournaments, he just loved it."

"Just trying to remember him and try to do him justice," Lang said.

With the attitude instilled in them by their former coach the Eagle golf team is on a mission in 2012.

"Its definatley just try to have fun," Lang said, "Because he really loved the game and he just wanted us to have fun out there and try to do good."

"We ant to go out there and especially play well for him," Angeo said "And As his last team, give everyone a good season to remember us."

"The way I'm going to take it is to be even more determined to win," Teague said. "Because thats the way he coached us. He always said play your best, but always think about persevering, always through the tough times so i am going to take that, and I'm going to be determined even more when we go into tournaments."

And the Mission for this team begins Feburary 24th when they open up thier season in Midland.
